    I agree.

To me, that doesn't make much sense. I'm not saying that the scenario of TD replacing WW can't or won't happen, but I believe they drafted him, first and foremost, because he was the most dynamic, most versitile defender available. He could just as easily replace Minter at SS, or Fields at SLB.

BTW, rather than drag up one of the threads where I get called an idiot for wanting to try him at SLB to post this, I'll post it here:

it's from the Roar, from LBs coach Ken Flajole* on Davis practicing at LB:

"Thomas Davis is another player we are looking foward to seeing in Spartanburg. We will look at him at linebacker when we go into our sub-package in certain third down situations. Since he is a new player, we will try to give him a limited role at linebacker and try to take advantage of what he does best. Because of his speed, we want to see how he matches up against tight ends and see if he can give us some flexibility in coverage."

So my suggestion that, whether at S or LB, he was drafted with the TE in mind, seems to hold water. Therefore, seems like the team doesn't seem to think that Davis at SLB (given that the "weakside" position he was supposedly at for coverage wasn't a weakside spot) isn't so ridiculous.

*still sucks to read that coaching spot without Sam's name there.

    Yes, I saw that.

I'm glad that they're at least exploring options, as I was sure they would do. It seems as though strongside responsibilities don't negate his strengths, according to one of Davis' coaches.

Yep. And that's all I was after - explore the options. Right now, given what we have, stopping the TE hides the one remaining hole we've got, and his tackling improves a minor weakness of the D as well. If it doesn't work, then it doesn't work, but I'm glad the staff is smart enough not to pigeonhole him because he weighs 230 instead of 235.

I like how you weren't wrong even though the team hasn't lined Davis up at SLB for even one rep in practice. Not even third or fourth team SLB. Not even for a single second.

But anyway, I do think Foster leaving is a foregone conclusion and I agree with Mags that we're better off not pursuing him anyway, but I must that I was pleasantly surprised to see how strong he looked early in camp. He was running with authority, actually cutting upfield instead of always heading to the sideline, and flashed some better hands than I remembered seeing from him before. If he can go on to have a huge season, that's awesome because it would likely mean a great season for the team, but that wouldn't change my mind about the long-term. That said, I do think Foster looks like his head is on straight and that he's giving maximum effort for the team. I was fairly down on him heading into camp, and I came away pretty darn impressed.

And yet he lines up at its counterpart for the nickel snaps, not weakside. They want him on the TE, which is what I wanted.

Regardless, the link I posted has Foster saying he does want to be here. I don't know what it's worth, and to a point don't care since I think we're being errant to try to wrap up any of these guys at this point.

Domanick Davis signed a deal today, four year extension. Should have bearing on this, at some point, if it's a decent deal (and knowing Dom, it's probably hefty)

Davis is one of the most underrated backs in the league, although he has some injury issues (nothing like Foster's).

Texans | Davis Lands $8 million in Guaranteed Money
    Sat, 6 Aug 2005 09:55:13 -0700

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli, as an update to previous stories, reports the contract extension Houston Texans RB Domanick Davis received is a four-year deal, keeping him under contract through 2009. Davis, who was in the last year of his previous contract, will receive $22 million, including $8 million in guaranteed money.
