I'd move him around if I drafted him...

You'll probably end up right, the low effort scares me off. It should also be noted that I wanted Jammer over Peppers back in '02 for similar reasons, and we all know how THAT turned out :p

McShay's new mock draft is out today and has us going with Cox.

He Would definitely add some sorely needed athleticism to our interior line, and while I agree with Colin that he's a bit of a reach here, I'd be OK if he was the pick.

Carolina PanthersRecord: 6-10 | Top needs: CB, OLB, WR, OT, DT, G, DE
    Fletcher Cox*, DT, Mississippi State
Scenario 1: Coach Ron Rivera needs an impact D lineman at some point, and Cox's versatility, explosiveness and motor would be put to good use.
Scenario 2: Bolster the defensive line with a defensive end such as Ingram if he should be available.
Scenario 3: Take their highest-rated available player at a position of need, whether that's Reiff, Floyd or South Carolina CB Stephon Gilmore.

The opposite is true. He plays much better in space than when head-up on blockers. He was productive year before last at DT, but he wouldn't replicate that success against NFL interior linemen. You could move him inside for obvious passing situations, but other than that he's strictly a DE.

And I just continued to be reminded of how every mock used to have the Panthers selecting a TE. I really don't see them going DT.

Hmmm. It was a different regime then, but you could be right. If you base it off of that, then defensive end almost HAS to be the pick. The team has acknowledged they must get better on defense. Publicly, they seem happy with the DT's and LB's. They've made some FA moves to shore up the secondary, but nothing along the D-line.

Fletcher Cox is the guy I'm hoping for but Collin is right that the team has consistently said this offseason that they feel pretty good about their DT's. Unlike Fox, Rivera seems to be more transparent, so I'm not sure that's "smoke and mirrors" as such.
