The NFL record for fewest sacks in a season (or since they started keeping such records) is 11 by Baltimore in 1982. The Panthers, with four in seven games, are well within record range. . . and why in the name of all that is Vince Lombardi, is Julius Peppers dropping back on third down to cover a flaring back? Have they just given up on his -- and the team's -- ability to rush the passer and decided to put him in situations he cannot possibly win? Perhaps someone who is more versed in the technical aspects of the game could comment...

What, none of you brilliant stategians and football-technical minds can offer any comments on this sorry state of affairs? Is Peppers sick? Are the other members of the D-line sick? Are they being used in the correct fashion? Does the D-line plan just suck, or are our fearless combatants simply incompetent? Is there a blitz plan, a la Eagles when EVERYBODY comes, or are the Panthers simply too timid for such a venture? Harking back to the days of Lathon, Greene and a healthy, adventurous Peppers, this certainly seems to be a contradiction of team history -- and success.

Im thinking more like Brady will be sacked the fewest times for a starting QB playing a whole season

calm down. the niners and falcons could easily give us 4 sacks apiece.

i'm guessing that since the rams and cardinals didn't, that's not a likely proposition.

turgo sucks. and they are trying to use peppers to make up for mediocre line backers and safeties.

Kemoeatu gives nothing as a pass rusher, meaning Jenkins can be double teamed. That prevents him from forcing the QB back in the pocket, and Peppers hasn't been effective at beating his man to the inside. Plus Rucker's just old.

For what it's worth, Indy and New Orleans have the fewest sacks allowed, and Arizona is 4th best, while Houston and Tampa Bay are both better than average in that respect. But to not get more against Atlanta and St. Louis was certainly disconcerting. To make matters worse, we're not getting pressures either. We have only 13 through seven games, which is incredibly pathetic. Jenkins, Rucker, and Peppers are tied with Richard Marshall and Otis Grigsby for our team lead with two quarterback hurries. That's just sad.

In terms of the technical analysis, we have blitzed, so that's not it. Against Indy we arguably blitzed too much. I don't know that dropping Peppers is making all that much difference either, since he's not doing much when he does rush the passer. I haven't really broken down a game yet this year, but I planned on doing so with Indy, so I'll let you know if I see something in particular. Right now my impression is that we just suck at it.
