I'd like some opinions on the best & worst services & programs out there. I did an online search, & the amount of information is overwhelming. I need to narrow it down somehow, & I know we have some savvy folks here.

Background on what I have & what I'm looking for:

I currently have MSN Premium internet service, which I haven't been entirely happy with. I have an msn email address & a yahoo address. I tried setting up Outlook Express (6) for my email, but couldn't use it for my free yahoo mail; & had some other technical issues that led me to abandon using Outlook altogether. Been so long, I don't even remember what the technical issues were.

I use email primarily for personal communications, but also for communicating with businesses. I like having 2 (maybe 3, max) accounts--one for the most important stuff, & one for more general stuff. I'd like to be able to use different "stationery" & smilies & to include photos sometimes. And I like to save my favorites & be able to categorize them in folders--on my own computer, not online. If I change ISPs over time, I'd like to still be able to open & read stuff I've saved. I'd like to be able to consolidate mail from various accounts in one area if I can.

Any suggestions on what I need to look for, or comments on specific programs or services?

Outlook or Outlook Express can read hotmail/windows live mail, and any POP3/IMAP4 source such as a roadrunner mail account or the like. That would include gmail, which is good because I HATE their web interface with a passion. Yahoo requires you to subscribe to their YAhoo PLUS service to get the pop3 capability.

Full Outlook has great contact management capabilities, great sorting/filtering, etc.

For other apps, someone might respond but it won't be me, I've never been unhappy with Outlook.

I've heard a lot of good stuff about gmail.

I'd still like to use something like Outlook to consolidate my mail in 1 place (which means switching to something other than Yahoo's free version). The full version of Outlook has a lot of excess crap I'll never use, though. Outlook Express would be fine if it worked right. Just to remind myself what the problem was, I opened it again today. It won't accept my username or password--either the stored version or when I enter it by hand.

Has anyone tried Thunderbird by Mozilla?
