Sav's post got me thinking. Which format do you think will will out? Or do you think they'll merge somewhat so that all players play all formats? I know at this point it's pretty much speculation, but whaddya think?

i didn't know there was a difference till somebody asked which i had gotten. (the answer to which i don't know).

    what IS the difference?

personally, i hope the DVD format doesn't last as long as CDs have (and will). already DVDs need swapping for long movies. when HD actually happens, the broadcasts will be better quality than DVD. an HD DVD would need to hold like 4 times the information.

That's why the blue laser, Sup. The blue beam is smaller than the red, so they can fit much more info on a similar sized disc.

As far as the differences in the formats, they are basically the same as far as benefits/drawbacks are concerned. The only problem is that a DVD-R won't play in a DVD+R player and vice versa. Some companies use - and some use +. This applies to the actual DVD players themselves as well as drives for CPU.

I use DVD-R for backing up my dvd's and DVD+RW for backing up my data. It's nice to have the option with my Sony dru500a. The only reason I use DVD+RW for data is because thats what came included with the burner and it claims to burn a little faster than the DVD-RW (2X compared to 2.4X for the dvd-rw) unless you spring for the 4X media. Gotta say, the dru500a is the only way to go if your concerned about the formats. Coaster free in 2003!
