So then I can reuse the tape once I have pulled it off the camera?

We bought a MiniDVD cam. preview :thud:

Actually, I can see what you mean, if you're into editing on your PC. The flipside is that we can just spit out short complete DVDs. So far, I've had zero compatibility issues and I really like the camcorder itself. The 33x optical zoom is insane compared to my aging digicam. I have a 1GB memory card that I keep in it to take photos. The quality & resolution aren't as good, but it's still presentable. It takes better quality stills than my camera's movies.

I think the future is in hard drive based HD cameras, but we needed one now.

yeah, but some tapes are only designed to be written to once. i'm sure you can rewrite to them, but you're more likely to get drop-outs. i tend to archive stuff, anyway. that's one of the drags about tape media is that it's serial access so you can't just insert more footage of the kid playing and reviewing what's on a tape means a lot of shuttling around. we tend to put only 10-20 minutes of stuff on any particular tape because mixing events just doesn't seem appropriate and getting 90 minutes of my sister-in-law's birthday is a bit of overkill.

    i'll never buy another camcorder

just give me a digital camera with video and i'll pop another flash card in it and drag and drop to my computer

i burned a dvd from the video which was 480x640 and it was beautiful on a 50" tv...

you're saving memories not creating master copies for sci-fi movies or whatever, camcorders are just too big and bulky to take everywhere you go

the camera i want comes out may 30th Canon SD700

    agreed.
digital camera with 4gb SD card = > 1 hour of video. The video, even at 640x480, isn't the same as a good digital camcorder, but it's good enough for my needs. When the kids get older and I need more zoom, better microphone support, etc., then maybe I'll buy a camcorder, but until then they're too bulky and expensive.

I'm just suprised that Nut & TimTam havent ripped me for my purchase. To be honest, I wasn't sure and didn't think it through. I got a good price and jumped on it.

no dude, if it works for you then more power to ya. I personally hate them and don't see any pluses. If you asked me what I thought pre-purchase I would do everything I could to convince you that its no good. but if you like then good job.

Let's see, Nut, TT and I all work in video related fields? I still prefer my digi8 to the DVD based cams. Hell, I'd just as soon have a SVHS Cam. :D
