OK, so the time has come... I'm getting my new machine.

My question is, what do you guys think about DVD burners? Is it too early to jump on this? Obviously they're definatly the way to go, I'm just worried that in a year they'll be a quarter the price and 5 times faster (yeah ok, that's a given - I'm just worried whether I'll give a damn or not).

I know some of you have them now. Pros/Cons?

I can upgrade my machine to have one for only $350.

the discs are still to expensive to make it worthwhile. I have seen discs on Ebay much cheaper than in the stores. Still not worth it to me quite yet.

Well, I got mine and I'm not sure why at this point! It's great for backups, but since it's not terribly fast, it takes like an hour to fill a disk. Oh well. I am at least running backups, tho.

Theoretically, I'll be able to burn movies to it too, but it's not quite as easy as that, I guess. There's a lot of DVD software out there that's sorta gray-market. The movie companies are trying to keep the codecs off the street or something. I still haven't found out how to burn a movie. And it took me some time to get the right software to play a movie, too.

Waiting wouldn't be a bad idea.

Hmm, Have you checked out iMovie?

DVD-R/DVD-RW. Toughone. Unless you planning on making home movies, I don't see the need. I would get one with a new computer if it was me. I would imagine you could get a lot of MP3's inside a 4.7 gig disc. That would be cool. Get the DVD/CD-RW combo for now and when your ready for DVD-R, you'll already have a drive to dub from.:D

What's the price difference between DVD/CD-RW and DVD-R?

Actually, we use final cut 3 on my GF's computer, which I'm guessing must have some DVD burning capability...

But that's on her MAC not on my PC. The DVD is here. It's an internal. The external was twice as expensive, so there was no way I was gonna buy it. It was also an HP, which I don't necessarily trust.
