Anything's possible, but I don't see Brohm being available there and can't think of anyone else I'd want. LB or safety would be better both short-term and long-term.

John Fox has made it pretty clear over time that he doesn't want to deal with a young QB. He replaced Weinke early, he kept chains on Jake for his first few games unless it was an emergency situation, and the rumor pages before Jake emerged stated how unlikely we were to go after a guy like Leftwich despite his obvious talent. Whoever does take over for Jake will be sitting behind both he and Weinke, at the least, through 07, IMO, and possibly 08, so I don't know that the team will be itching to spend a 1st on a guy who'll sit that long.

It's getting close to time to think about that, in the natural course, but I'll personally dread it, after watching so many teams' fans hopelessly look toward some idiot rookie to save their fucking awful team as if this is just another Disney movie where suddenly everyone has talent because the unknown guy is under center.

It is getting time to think about it, because if we do draft someone for that purpose they will sit like you say.

But we could also take a guy who sat for others like Jake did, and will sit a minimal amount of time here.

it also seems clear given this regimes past that we are not likely to offer Carter (and his agent) enough to stay, based on what would be little more than his apparent potential. Our FO is likely to roll the dice next year (and beyond) at WR with Smitty and Key entrenched as what seems to be 90% of Jakes target(s)
IMO none of us should get too attached to what Carter could be on this team . . . he should be expected to bolt immediately for a bigger payday

Agreed, and I was worried about that when he was overtaking Colbert.

I don't believe there's a huge need to go get another WR next year, but if Carter does go in RFA, and even if he doesn't, a returner is a good way to add that depth.

Disagree. Most of Carter's catches were early in the year, when he WAS an important part of the O. I don't care what the numbers were. You could just watch and tell he was important. In previous years, Proehl was a KEY part of the O. Remember?

The point now is that Carter has disappeared. So I don't think season totals are all that useful. Compare the 1st games to recent games. That would be interesting.

I don't blame Joker, but I'm seriously wondering about the XBox too. Maybe Carter has not shown commitment recently.

    ????

Not many people think Weinke has the talent to start. Jake was having all kinds of problems with the O. Leftwich was a serious injury risk, has a long long wind up, and has not really succeeded in the NFL yet. I don't count any of those as Fox not wanting to deal with a young QB. He may not want to spend a high 1st on one, but that's another issue.

I don't really buy that Jake was struggling with the O. Any time the O needed opened up that year, no matter how early, he was magical. There were limits put on him.
