while it lacks a lot of relevance, it's still useful for the writers to note things they're seeing and hearing, as part of the idea of bringing us that experience.

When Panthers general manager Marty Hurney talks about rookie running back Jonathan Stewart, he sometimes reminisces about two backs who helped lead his teams to Super Bowls -- Stephen Davis and Natrone Means.

Davis, a Spartanburg native, helped the Panthers reach the Super Bowl during the 2003 season. Means' running was a key to the San Diego Chargers reaching the title game against San Francisco in 1994.

Hurney was the Panthers' GM in '03 and worked for Chargers' GM Bobby Beathard in '94.

Now, Means has joined Hurney during training camp to help tutor the Panthers' running backs, including Stewart.

Means is one of four men who are serving coaching internships for the Panthers as part of the NFL's minority fellowship program.

Means, who formerly starred at North Carolina and Central Cabarrus High, said he's excited about working with Stewart, DeAngelo Williams and the rest of the Panthers' backs.

Means acknowledged that Stewart reminds him of himself. Like Means "back in the day," Stewart is compact, muscular, powerful, and fast.

    Stewart is 5-10, 235 pounds. Means was 5-10, 245.

More on this in tomorrow's print and online editions of the Observer.

    ======

-- Linebacker Adam Seward flattened DeAngelo Williams before he could get into a pass route during a situational drill.

-- Williams and fellow running back Jonathan Stewart had several eye-catching runs that drew oohs, aahs and cheers from fans in attendance. Williams sparkled when he took a pitch to the right, quickly cut back inside and ran across the grain to the left.

-- Dazzling catches by Steve Smith aren't uncommon, but you never get tired of seeing them. He dove and batted a Jake Delhomme pass with one hand and then caught it with both hands as he was falling to the ground.

-- In one-on-one blocking drills, defensive end Julius Peppers blew past offensive tackle Frank Omiyale with a super-fast spin move. It was no contest, but, to be fair to Omiyale, it's unlikely any OT in the NFL could have survived that one.

-- Peppers has always looked like a thoroughbred athlete, but he seems even bigger and stronger this year. He is said to have worked out extensively during the offseason with a trainer in Arizona.

-- Second-year receiver Ryne Robinson put a move on cornerback Ricardo Colclough that NFLers dream about. Robinson caught a short pass near the sideline, then came to a quick stop like he was putting his foot down hard on a brake. Colclough bit on the move and Robinson accelerated past him.

-- So far, it looks like Robinson and Dwayne Jarrett are the second tier of receivers. The first, of course, includes Smith, Muhsin Muhammad and D.J. Hackett.

-- The only injuries so far appear to be minor. Fullback Nick Goings has a sprained ankle and wide receiver Josh Davis hurt his calf, according to coach John Fox.

I'm kind of surprised that there was no mention of Brayton schooling Otah on one of the 1 on 1s. Magazu talked to Otah, then lined them up for a do over.

The sad part is, I think they meant to say Smitty.
