It sounds like Hurney was deflecting some blame from himself there.

Agree on both. But he failed at drafting a leader.

I wonder if the need for a "leader" is function of the type of coach you have. I have no idea what Rivera is like in the locker room, but we know what Couglin is like and I'm pretty sure he doesn't need any help from a player to get his messages across.

The coach is always supposed to be a leader, as that's part of the job. If the coach isn't then a Ray Lewis-type player can fill that role, but it shouldn't be necessary. Fox's stubbornness annoyed the crap out of me, but he was a leader. Hurney's comments make it clear that he had no idea what he was doing. He talks about football the way a fan would.

Didn't coughlin establish a sort of vet leaders group he could consult to avoid a locker room mutiny?

Rivera echoed the "leader" thing apparently today.
I remember JR naming a ton of leaders in one of the various interviews where he mentioned his vision for building this team in 2011, and named what he felt were a ton of leaders, and stated he felt there was more leadership on this team than he felt he'd ever had.

So there's a disconnect there, absent some miracle communication from JR that wouldn't come until January. I personally don't know about some of those other names JR named, but we very recently put a lot of leadership on injured reserve, so I have to wonder whether it'll really be possible to finish the season without some major problems.

I don't think Rivera makes it to the end of the year.

He's already admitted that's he coaching for his job. I translate that as "turn this mess into a playoff birth or you're gone", which probably means no less than an 8-2 finish. A November firing seems more likely.
