A friend is trying to install Linux on a HP and is getting some sort of error such as "can't find partition" or something like that. Any idea if he just simply needs to create a partition since the pc was ordered without an OS? He thinks the Debian install disk should create the partition itself and the pc was damaged during shipment.

I don't work with him so it's not my problem but we share office space and his contant bitching and cussing distracts me. Any ideas?

get an ipod. the social contract stipulates that a person wearing earphones doesn't want to hear it.

if that doesn't work, dunno what to tell you. the debian setup really ought to handle a clean disk -- no need to make a partition. he might check the drive jumpers to make sure it's set up correctly.

Funny, the Ipod thing was already in motion. I'll take a look at the jumpers, he doesn't have the patience. Typical Mac user.

The problem was HP. Somehow they sent some mismatched hardware that didn't work together. Wrong controller or something.

He ordered SATA, they sent a SCSI that didn't work. It took about 4 hours of arguing to get them to take it back and send the correct box. I'll never order anything from them that's for sure. Not that I would have to begin with.

CMS is in a partnership with HP, and the first year was pretty bad. We rarely have hardware problems now. I've not dealt with HP on the retail side, though.

So what do you think about HP servers? How do they stack up in terms of quality with Dell?

I'm always partial to Dell, but I've put in many HP servers with no more problems than Dell. They're both a hell of a lot better than IBM NetFinity's I've dealt with.

We had an HP box go down at another client of ours and I ended up having to call HP for support. They had a local guy there in about an hour with a new chassis. Pretty good warehouse system.

A lot of times you go with what you know, or what you get a better deal with. Someone like me is OK with HP or Dell, out of necessity.
