I haven't had a chance to really dig into this, but on the surface, it looks like a pretty good deal. He takes less money in 2014 and 2015. There will likely be some dead money in 2016 (I am seeing around $2.2 mil). I'll take a closer look at the contract later today if i get a chance.

    Some comparisons:

    Year Old Deal New Deal
    2013 Cap $8.2 mil $5.0 mil
    2013 Cash $5.0 mil $5.0 mil
    2014 Cap $9.2 mil $6.0 mil
    2014 Cash $6.0 mil $3.0 mil
    2015 Cap $10.2 mil $6.33 mil
    2015 Cash $7.0 mil $3.0 mil

2016 and 2017 contract years are at a $1.0 mil base salary, but that is bogus as the deal will void after the 2015 league year (much like Gross'). That will leave a little less than $2.3 mil in dead money for the 2016 year. However, we save around $10 million in cap dollars from 2013 to 2015 as well as $7 million in cash.

I guess its making the best out of a bad situation. There is definitely relief in the early years.
This $2.2 million will be spread over 2016 and 2017?
And does this change the cap implications if he is cut?

I am not sure on the $2.2 being spread over the two years. My guess is that it won't. Not much change to the implications if he is cut/traded. If anything, more will accelerate because base salary in 2013 was converted to bonus. so this looks like a move made with the intention of having him play through 2015 and let the deal void.

I have mixed feelings. I like the idea of DeAngelo playing his entire career here, but it means he will continue to be a salary cap anchor. Carolina will have $12 million of the cap committed to the two running backs in 2014 and $15 million in 2015.

Now let me ask this - we're all assuming he stays - does this just make him easier to trade, or no.

No, since more of his base salary was converted to signing bonus the acceleration penalty on trading him increased.

Although the weird thing about the dummy years on the end of this contract and Gross' is that they might become valuable trade chips. Those dummy years have minimal base salaries and are designed to draw out more of the bonus pro-ration, but if another team wanted either of those players at those ages then they would become more attractive due to the very low base salary. If that happens then those agents are going to be in deep trouble. I doubt it does because the timing of the void would seem to mean that you'd have to trade them during the last of the real years, but it's possible. I also have to believe that the NFL will do something to prevent these dummy years from being used since they're obviously circumventing the salary cap.

Gettleman seems to be making the most out of a bad situation. He's was given a shit sandwich to eat for lunch so he said fuck it and put a slice of cheese, some lettuce, and mayo on that bitch and is chowing down.
