this is also posted on page 4 of the buckner thread, but it needs it's own mention IMO

    Panthers make
    salary cap moves
Davis, Buckner, Smart are cut; Minter contract getting reworked
    PAT YASINSKAS
    [email protected]

Facing a Friday deadline to get under the salary cap, the Carolina Panthers began clearing room Wednesday.

The Panthers are in the process of restructuring the contract of safety Mike Minter to trim his $3.6 million cap figure and parted ways with running back Stephen Davis, defensive tackle Brentson Buckner and running back/return man Rod Smart.

The Panthers have more than $102 million committed toward a 2006 salary cap that’s likely to be between $93 and $95 million.

Minter’s restructuring will free up about $1.7 million. Releasing Buckner, who was scheduled to have a $2.5 million cap figure, will clear about $1.5 million. Davis was due a $1.05 million roster bonus Friday and the Panthers avoided paying that and dropped his salary cap hit from $3.8 million to about $1 million with his release.

The Panthers also could make a move with their linebackers. Brandon Short, who has a $2.05 million salary cap figure, is scheduled to receive a $250,000 roster bonus this week and Chris Draft, who has a $1.15 million cap figure, is slated to receive a $100,000 bonus.

The Panthers also are likely to restructure the contracts of several other veterans. Other possibilities include Julius Peppers, Jake Delhomme, Ken Lucas and Mike Wahle. The Panthers also could restructure the contract of defensive end Mike Rucker, who’s scheduled to receive a $500,000 roster bonus this week.

The Panthers would like to be well below the salary cap when free agency starts Friday. They’ll continue efforts to re-sign free agents Will Witherspoon, Marlon McCree and Jeff Mitchell, who will begin testing the market Friday.

Witherspoon is likely to draw the most attention from other teams, with Philadelphia and Jacksonville expected to show early interest.
