I am not a "glass half empty" guy as you put it. I think the Panthers as a team will be very much improved from last year, especially offensively. I expect no less than 4 or 5 wins. I just look at the stats and the situation. We all know the following:
1) Every year out of the top ten picks, there are always 2 or 3 "busts".
2) Peppers does not have the best work ethic, nor the best attitude (as evidenced by his comments to the media) we've ever seen.
3) Talent does not always equal production.
I have to agree that Peppers may ALREADY be the most talented player we have ever had. Few players from the college ranks have ever possessed his physical abilities. In 2 or 3 years, I think he will be a "solid" player, just never a great one, and certainly not worthy of the number 2 pick we spent on him. For Peppers equal, I would point you to Dan Wilkinson in Washington. Had all kinds of ability coming out of OSU (could be wrong about his college, memory kind of foggy), and currently is a starter, but will never be considered for the Pro Bowl or the Hall of Fame, so I think the Bengals would consider him a bust.
By the way, I consider a bust any player (college draftee or free agent) who does not live up to what he is paid, ala Chuck Smith, ala Sean Gilbert, ala Timmy B.
Let the games begin,
