I'm talking about "hustle" players who get hyped for their hard work and don't produce, not players that produce. Carstens was a missing man against the run last year.

Yes, I'm talking about guys like Mangum, as well.

We traded down to get him. We don't have a problem with reaching for players who aren't great value, so even they knew that Shelton wasn't great value.

i'm confused. sounds like you said he was a good value pick i.e., "rated higher by me than his pick" and then you say "even they knew he wasn't a great value." flip-flop?

For one, you're bickering over four spots difference over an amateur ranking v/s where a team picked a player. Yes, I had Shelton at 50. These two aren't exactly parallel, though thank God you finally pulled something together to back up something you're saying.

I'm happy to have gotten him. I assumed someone would reach for him there. He also isn't performing well, and this team's notorious for trading down when they were looking to reach for a guy, the only positive of the moves having been to this point trading down in the 3rd for Witherspoon. So far, we certainly seemed to know that Shelton wasn't value at 45, and couldn't move lower than we did; we certainly knew Bruce Nelson wasn't a great value at 45, either, and traded out of the pick.

i'd agree on Carstens last year. last year, he was quick and active with a lot of "hustle" (though i generally don't like that term as it seems to have a negative connotation when often it isn't deserved), and seemed to me to be too light/small. but i thought he looked a ton better this year in preseason ... seemed to be heavier and much stronger with the same quickness and "motor" / "high effort." could be that he will be a Mangum (whom i expected to be your prime example and i will not argue his worth for lack of interest in such a discussion) but it mite too be that Carstens can develop into a damn decent DT, which is why i'd suspect they'd be willing to keep him over your draft pick.

in any case, it will be interesting to see which of the two between Carstens and Ellison become the better player. i never really watched Ellison in preseason so don't have an opinion on him.

I agree, and fairly or not I was giving it to him. I think Ciurciu has that same connotation, and it's the fault of neither player that we don't have better/they beat out supposedly better players. But I do think that you see them flying around doing all kinds of shit that catches the eye, but it's not usually for actually impacting the play as much as being noticeable, if that makes sense.
