Correct, but to CLAIM one of our cuts, they have to put them on the 53 man roster. If any cuts are not claimed, the eligible ones can sign to our PS or sign with someone else's PS as they choose.

I was sad to see Cramer go. Hoover's been dinged up the last couple of seasons, and Cramer seemed to be good enough to stick. I think this may come back to haunt us. At least he made the PS though (I think).

I'll join the chorus here and ask WTH? with Carstens beating out Ellison. Not that I've seen tape to back that up, but still -- you don't cut 3rd round picks for street free agents without good cause (squatters rights don't apply, IMO).

Yeah, the '05 draft, which was almost billed to be a no-lose situation is shaping up to be the worst draft in franchise history. Sad.

Jeez... how in the HELL can this be the worst draft possible?

We get Thomas Davis who could end up being a hell of a Defensive player, once he's been put at 1 position. Shelton is admittedly a project, but he's being given up on far too soon. Mathis looks to be a future starter. Full time possibly as soon as next year. Hangertner was a suprise as late as he was found. Haye isn't shabby... plus in comparison NO draft we've ever had could be as bad as this one... http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/years/1998

Yeah, okay. It's definitely not as bad as '98. I'll agree with you there, Brain. :)

Carstens has surprisingly, at least to me, looked very good. I'd put him ahead of Morehead (no play on words intended). He apparently worked his ass off during the offseason ... and beat the rook out of a job. Personally, I love stories where the underdog is rewarded for his efforts. Also says alot about our FO and coaching staff.

I'll join FW's chorus and say that the draft looks pretty iffy at this point in time. If Davis doens't become all-world, i'd think you'd mite have to call it a bad draft even if we eventually get a couple of decent players from the later part of the draft. If Davis does become all-world, then it can probably still be considered a good draft if a couple of others do indeed develop. The two rook OL both look solid to me. I'd love to root for Lefors but his height worries me. Otherwise, not much to get excited about.

So far I'm very impressed with Lucas. I think he's gonna a make a huge difference. (just wanted to throw that in somewhere since I haven't heard much opinion on him lately)

The less we hear Lucas' name the better off we are. That means he's playing well and the opponents just are'nt throwing to his man.
The fact that our picks haven't stuck is that we are finally very deep talent-wise. I'll take that.

It's iffy, at this point.* Davis still looks like a football player, and I'll take that. Mathis has the right attitude and all the skills I want in a guard. Seward looks both smart and agile, and yet he's not a puss about taking on a block. I'm sure that fans will hype Lefors for years as being better than he is, but he's still got promise to not be that bad at all.

You really have to hit on those 2nd and 3rd rounders, and right now we're at 1 of 3. Even if Mathis is a hell of a guard in the future, and I feel he will be, there's not a ton of impact there. Shelton and Ellison would've been bigger impact, all other things equal.

We knew we were reaching for Shelton, too. And that's part of what hurt so much with Nelson, them knowing they were trading down because they were going to reach so hard for a guy who'd probably be there a round later anyway. Whether Shelton would've been around in 3 is hard to say - I'm guessing no - but he certainly wasn't the quality of an Arrington a few picks earlier. Shelton didn't have a ton of time in college, and did run high and ran away from people. He played in a subpar football conference.

Ellison, though, had no real reason at all to not be good, and was by many/most regards the better of the two Missouri DTs. Carstens wasn't so good as to disregard the relative difference between the two, and yeah, I'd as well have kept a 3rd round pick on the roster over some overachieving, undertalented "underdog". We've got plenty of them, and we've usually been clamoring to replace them.

*I'm not going to be one of those fucking goobers who says "you can't judge it yet", because that never makes sense. We're here for that purpose. People saying that annoys me almost as much as people who have enough sense not to use half-ass shorthand like "LBer" or "OLman", but still do.
