    Former Smithfield-Selma High School standout football lineman Curtis Whitley passed away today, according to The News & Observer and The Charlotte Observer. Whitley went onto play at Chowan and then Clemson after his days with the Spartans and later played for the Carolina Panthers, the Oakland Raiders and the San Diego Chargers during his six-year NFL career.
    He had just turned 39 on Saturday.

    he was busted for drugs early on, yes? that's what got Frank Garcia to start for so long.

    found it. Suspended four games, alcohol-related. Soon after Shawn King's issue. Garcia would start through the playoffs and not lose the job again until we retooled in 2001 spring from the ground up.

    Only a couple Panthers have ever died. Four, I guess.

    Four over twelve years of existance...that's alot considering none of them would be over 40 yet.

    Sam was already over 40 obviously. Pretty sure White was almost 45.
