Is it possible to capture video on your hard drive and turn it into a VCD (Video cd) using the cd burner? If so, how would that be accomplished?

I'd love to get a new Mac with the Super Drive (combo CD-R/CD-RW/DVD-RW). It comes with software iMovie and iDVD to burn DVD's to use in almost any player. Only thing is it only holds like 60-90min of video. I took my nieces skate party with iMovie and made a 20 minute QuickTime movie that's about 100mb. The files or "clips" I used to edit and make the movie is almost 3 gigs. I'm not sure what software you need on PC's, but I think it comes standard with ME.
What kind of video do you want to do? I think 15 minutes of a video off my camera is about 1 gig or more.

I was hoping to use my hard drive as a VCR (with a TV input) and then save the good stuff on VCD. I know they used to put movies on a single VCD and it was better resolution than VHS, but not as good as DVD. I assume I could get at least a couple hours on a disc.

Oh man, screw that....too much work. Plus it's A LOT of hard drive, plus it has to have excellent access rate.
Do you have DirecTV or Time Warner. They both offer that DVR with 35 hours. Like in my other post, it's the shit. Practically one touch recording, duel tuners, PIP, all digital, no tapes to shuffle. The DirecTV RCA box is only $99 at radio shack. If you have The Dish, they offer a recorder that has no monthly fee.

A DVR would be great, but I want perminant storage. I know I can set my hard drive up to work just like a DVR, it's just transferring it to disk I'm curious about.
Plus, I've already got the dvd player that has VCD decoding.

You can transfer to a VCR directly from the DVR. Plus, when the prices drop, to a recordable DVD player.
I think it would take about 8 gigs for a 2 hour movie.

I want to get completely away from VHS. I hate that it's linear, and going from my hard drive to a disc will allow me many more editing options. As far as space, there's no way a 2 hour movie would take 8 Gigs. In DVD format a 2 hour movie, and tons of special features fit onto a 5 Gig disc.
I'm virtually certain that VCD's have hte same capacity as any other cd, and I know that a full length movie will fit onto one. I'm not trying to come up with something that hasn't been done before, just trying to do it at home.

I'm just probably don't understand or we're on two different pages. I've been trying learn more about editing videos because of new little girl. I was wrong about the amount of space though. In DV format, right off my camcorder, 1 minute is @ 216mb. When it's transferred to DVD, it's compressed to mpeg format. I have no idea the amount of space off a VHS.
