As the resident computer/periphrial salesman on the board, I figure I should be the first to wedge my foot in my mouth. I'm thinking of building a new comp for myself, but we at Staples don't carry a lot of the things I need. Anyone know of a good site to find processors/motherboards/cases, etc.?

do a search here for AMERITECH. i thought i mentioned them before. that's how i built my computer.

A free tip!!!:

The foam that comes on the bottom of your new motherboard is NOT packaging! You'll need it to have a computer that actually works. Something about insulating the board from the metal screws on the case. Live and learn.

And when I think I found what I wanted, do a search for the model # in Yahoo shopping. I have a couple of parts I bought for my PC at home and now the processor is gone and I don't see me replacing it. If your interested, I have a 16mb and a 32 mb AGP graphics card, a duel USB PCI, 56k PCI Win/Vioce/Fax modem, Sound card, either seperate or combo's with the modem, and a 10/100 ethernet PCI card. I can't remember. I also have a 16 gig HD, but I'll probably through that in my Mac. It's all fairly new, but I'm sure you'll want to buy the latest and greatest. I have some cable and wires too, that could trim some of the price off for you. Oh, and a floppy drive that's pretty good. Not a high dollar item, but still a necessity with PC's.

How bout the ram? So are you getting a new tower, power supply, motherboard, Intel P4 1.6 (at least) for $360?

Did you have yours built there? I'm just asking because you have had several problems with adding cards and drivers and stuff like with a certain DSL company I won't mention. I'm not trying to give you shit, but that's the very reason I don't suggest to anybody to build your own system.

A while back, people had to do it to get what they wanted. Today's computers are cheap enough, come equiped enough that you don't need to. Unless your just up for the challenge of it all, just buy one. You can go to any website like Dell, IBM, Gateway, and Apple, and customize a system or just add ram to one already in the store. The time you save will be worth the little extra you might spend. These companies do a lot of testing for compatabilities it's worth it, not to mention the warranty. Buy a base set-up and upgrade some stuff, but don't build one. JMHO.

you hit the nail right on the head Buddy. I'm doing it for the challenge of it as much as anything else. The people I'm selling to are buying things for the computers they've bought... I wanna know first hand what they're going through.
