I listened to it Track by Track on Sirius a couple of times over the weekend, and I liked it a lot on the first couple of listens. I'll judge more when I can really sit and listen to it.

    on my 2nd listen-

till kingdom come (hidden johnny cash tribute track)

    a message

    swallowed in the sea

and the hardest part are not jiving with me.

x and y- the title track- whips ass, as does twisted logic, square one and talk. nothing hits you over the head though like a rush of blood to the head.

    TALK is amazing.

I feel all guilty for crapping all over this album cause LJ is such a good guy.

I decided to give it a second chance.

Talk is probably my favorite song on the album. I still don't think anything packs as much punch as AROBTTH, nor is there a song as well written as The Scientist, but Talk is good and a couple of other songs could grow on me.

Not every album can be a masterpiece.

This isn't a masterpiece like A Rush of Blood is/was methinks. However, it has definite potential but definite bad trends. Sloppy lyrics at times. I'm loving some of their dirtier tracks like x & y, twisted logic, talk and white shadows. I think if they can embrace their parachutes side with this new frontier- they will be damn impressive.

Producer is the same as before (Ken Nelson).

Talk is on now - it'd be tons better if it wasn't so synthy. granted, not everything can be acoustic piano and guitar, but it feels made for it.

The Edge-like guitar feel doesn't bother me, I noticed that two albums ago when I started paying attention.

    White Shadows feels very natural.

Speed of Sound is as if they really wanted to re-do Clocks, which means they probably got pressure to make another song like that. The bridge is cool, when the drums come in heavier, that sounds more like a rock deal. The rest of the song starts to remind me of toned down Postal Service - good lyrics that could stand better music around it.

I didn't really give A Message a ton of consideration. Low has a nice groove for white music, but it seems missing something. Not the synth, but it seems like they wrote a U2 song and turned down the high vocals and the guitar to make it seem less so. If the guitar's going to riff, go for it. If you're going to snag U2, go for it. Balls out. But they don't.

I dunno - I've heard a ton of albums by acts I love, that all of them seem to be going "in a new direction." Not bad, but not the same. In other words, somebody's pressuring them to make their generic mid-2000s CD. Don't let it rock too hard, but don't let it be poppy. Be political, but not controversial.
Bonus points for having a song that has the word "American" in it. Fucking generic rock, as if the people who used to listen to intermediate rock have grown too mellow but don't want to revert to Hootie, yet.
