Smith won't have as good a year because we won't be involved in as many shootouts. Our defense is better than that now. But he's as good or better a playmaker than Moose, and while I miss Muhammad, with him we wouldn't have Lucas. Take your pick.

Playmaker from a speed standpoint in the open field, yes, from the red zone Moose is the favorite hands down.

If the team wanted to make a run at it, they could have found a way to make it happen, to have Moose and Lucas both.

What are Gardner and Proehl costing us? I would take a Moose over them and have Colbert as a number 3. That may not be enough to get the numbers where they needed to be, but it could have been done.

I'd argue he certainly was, once Jake stopped locking onto Smith/once the O opened up toward the end of 03.

No, not really. Moose got a huge paycheck from Chicago, and matching that definitely would have meant missing out on Wahle or Lucas. The only way he would have been kept is if we had extended him prior to the 2004 season as I wanted to.

Moose was mostly what we needed him to be whatever that was and whenever we needed it.

Nope, your memory doesn't serve you. Moose was solid over that period, but aside from the Washington game, he wasn't anything special. Hey, I loved the guy, but it's silly to overstate what he was just because he's gone now and someone isn't satisfied with how our #2 receivers are doing. I want to see Colbert do better as well, but it's simply wrong to pretend that Moose was that effective when he was a #2.

The funny thing is that I used to defend him when these same people crapped on him, and now I'm providing the reality check when they gush about how great he was.

Hey Collin, you remember it one way and everybody else remembers it another way. Whatever works for you. Nobody is saying all of Mooses year were like last year. But it wasn't because Moose wasn't good, it was either Smitty was the number one option, we had a different gameplan, had a Walls that got a lot of attention a few years ago, coaching changes, QB problems at times or injuries.

The only two things negative that I ever remember abourt Moose was when he had the hammy issues from not preparing the way he should, but he took care of that. He did have a few stretches early on where he had more drops than I liked.

He has never been a speedster, but aside from that he has all the tools you want in a WR imo.

But again these are all my opinions from what I have seen.

Yeah, and some of the same people who remember it this new way were the ones who bashed Moose constantly prior to '04, mostly because of his drops and inconsistency.

And regarding what I remember and how accurate it is:

    2001 Carolina Panthers 11 games, 50 catches, 585 yards, 11.7 average, and 1 td.
    2002 Carolina Panthers 14 games, 63 catches, 823 yards, 13.1 average, and 3 tds
    2003 Carolina Panthers 15 games, 54 catches, 837 yards, 15.5 average, and 3 tds
