I just finished reading "Never Die Easy" the postuhumously published autobiography of Walter Payton. It seems that he was originally interested and even involved in negotiations to be a part owner of the Panthers during their bid for a team. Same Deal with Michael Jordan and George Shinn, Payton wanted a say in football operations, but Jerry decided Mark could do it better. When Payton was rejected he teamed up with a group wanting hte other franchise to be in St. Louis (the Rams were still in LA), but it failed when several partners couldn't put up the $ they had promised. (Interesting side note: Payton's St. Louis team would have been called the Mustangs. Once it failed and they dropped the copyright on their logo, the Broncos jumped all over it... hense their new logos a couple years back)
Just think, if we had Jordan we wouldn't be talking about losing the Hornets and he would have come back with us, and had we had Payton (even with his early passing) we could have had an early foundation on which to build a stronger team.
