Checkers Playoff Pep Rally @ The Epicentre (5/10/11)

Headed to the Epicentre Uptown yesterday afternoon to check out the Checkers Playoff Pep Rally . . . The Checkers (in their first year in the AHL) are headed to the Eastern Conference Finals to take on the Binghamton Senators (Game 1 is Thursday night).

The Playoff Pep Rally was also a viewing party to watch the E:60 News Show (ESPN) story on team superfan Zach Bennett, an 11 year old kid originally from Albany, NY; Zach and his family were long time fans of the team when they were the Albany River Rats. Zach has lost both legs due to a rare disease and the then River Rats (and now Checkers) have come to his aid to help in his medical care over the last couple of years. This season, the Checkers took the extra step in helping the family move down here to a new house in the Charlotte area to be closer to doctors who are experts in treating his condition.

It was a cool night to help get the Checkers ready for the next round of the playoffs and watch a great story on a great kid that has quickly gotten major national attention now . . .
