    No, the dead money happens either way. Only difference used to be whether you could designate the cut as post June 1 to prorate the dead money 2 seasons whereas a trade it all comes at once but since the CBA hasn't been renewed you can't do that.

    That's the piece of the puzzle I was missing. It's understandable that they preferred to keep him out of the division rather than cutting him and risking that.
