Panthers work out five backs, including Cason; will make a decision today

    By: Steve Reed
    Gazette Sports Reporter

CHARLOTTE — The Carolina Panthers worked out five free agent running backs on Tuesday but as of last night had not signed any of them, according to general manager Marty Hurney.
The team will decide today whether to sign one or bring undrafted rookie Joey Harris off the practice squad.

Among those who worked out for the Panthers was Aveon Cason, who spent last season with the Cowboys. The team has also shown some interest in ex-Panther Skip Hicks, but it’s unclear if he was among those who worked out.

According to sources close to the team, Cason is the back that most interests the Panthers because he has the speed to serve as a third-down back.

Cason’s agent, Tony Agnone, did not return phone calls on Tuesday.

The Panthers would not confirm which players they worked out.

The Panthers are hoping Stephen Davis will return from a knee injury this week and start against Philadelphia, but they are still in need of another body with backups DeShaun Foster and Rod Smart already declared out with injuries.

Cason Has the skillz Smart lacks as a RB and he has run with SOME sucess as a Cowboy. He can run inside or outside and hits the hole quickly, but doesn't burst through a lot of tackles.
A buddy of mine is a huge Cowboy fan and was thinking he would be the starter there this year at this point last season.

He's just a little smaller then you would typically want for a bust it up the gut RB. Good fit here though for what we need.

Like I said in another thread, Stacey Mack fits, but I don't know if he has nything left. Cason isn't bad, and Damian Anderson wouldn't be half bad either.

he's a 3rd down back at best. if he were any good, parcells wouldn't have cut him...nor would the lions who were desperate for a RB at the time.

I would just as soon give Harris a shot to show something. He supposedly looked good in practice.

Yeah, Cason is probably the best bet at this point, but not that good an inside runner. Still, better than Smart, and a returner.
