I heard McShay on ESPN today say that of the top 17 rated QBs, only Vick had come from a non traditional offense. I don't know how accurate that is, but if it is accurate, that would concern me quite a bit.

The idea is drafting Newton, sitting him for the whole year behind a new Vet (Volek), and coaching him up.
He never sees the field in 2011.
Then, ideally, in 2012, we have a franchise QB.

Brees also came from a spread, though it was a lot more run and shoot style than it is now with its option reads and very basic architecture.

So there you go. The two shortest guys out there came from a spread. Brees took four years to get decent.

again I've never known this offense, which is pretty strict about its responsibilities, to have a running QB.

well, I mean, Christ Over Easy, fitting the offense generally does help.

I dont think the environment made Clausen fail - i think he just sucks.

the environment definitely made him fail. Sure, it looked early in May like it's the best possible thing for him, but there was nothing good about our offense.
Whether he'll suck in the future or not is undetermined.

I have been reading until now, at which time I am posting. Getting to the point.

Weird feelings that I have about this draft:

    1. Newton is fool's gold. Christian Ponder will be the gem at QB (please fast forward to 2020 to confirm)

    2. I do not want to give a guy a possible $55 million for the first four years while his father is negotiating for his eventual UFA period with other teams during year 3 of his contract. (I realize they other teams would not do this, but can you imagine what he will ask for in his second contract if he is successful? It will make Peppers' contract look like a tip)

    3. Newton was cheating at Florida, was caught with a stolen computer and threw it out the window after cops took the serial # off. He talked about how much he looks up to his father during pre-heisman interviews.

    4. If you wiff on a QB with the first overall pick, you cripple your franchise for some time (See Oakland, Tennessee, Washington, etc). Newton has questionable football IQ--he is a 1-hit wonder in college's simplest offense. Were it not for his running ability, something NFL coaches will take away from him and make him a pocket passer, he is no better than Gabbert, who should go in the bottom half of round 1.

    5. I have a hunch that Newton will want a big market with big cameras if he is successful. Carolina is likely to spend 4 years grooming the next QB in Philly, NY, NE, or Washington. Newton loves the glitter.

Trade down, Panthers. THere will be some interest.

No, there won't. All this trade down talk pisses me off. We are taking the pick whether we like it or not. Yes, Cam did some dumb shit when he was 19, just like I did and probably most folks. Doesn't mean he can't be a great QB.
