    Here's the main question:

We obviously need a franchise QB.
Is THIS year ( having the # 1 pick) our best chance to snag one, or do we think we'll be in a similar situation NEXT year to snag one ?

If we're not #1 next year, there's no chance on Luck (no one's going to trade his rights away). I'm not sure what other QB's will be available next year.

If we don't get one this year, or next year, we're starting in the same rut as before, trying to get by with a "game manager".

I don't know how we'll get a franchise QB without drafting him in the first round this year. It's not like we'll be able to trade to get one, or pick one up in free agency. I don't think we've got a choice -- I think we have to draft Newton this year.

I'm starting to lean this way. He could be a major bust, but he also has the potential to be a superstar. Pick him, set him all next year behind a vet, and release the hounds 2012.
(We can address DT via free agency).

I don't think that's realistic. Unless Clausen has a breakout, folks will be screaming for Newton by week 3, maybe sooner. The available vets suck.

I think fans would be patient if they knew this was the plan from day 1. We're going to suck next year anyway (especially if there's a delayed lockout in the off season). I wouldn't keep Clausen, however. Go get Volek to be the teacher/starter, let the team learn the new system for a year, get another high top 10 pick next year (receiver?) . Ready to roll 2012.

I remember how gaga some fans were over Dameyune Craig, who wasn't good enough to get drafted, and why most of them were. I have no concerns of whether or not fans would be patient with Newton sitting, and know for certain he'll be a long term failure if he plays immediately.

Fans will be screaming after the first 3 and out. That's not a new phenomenon in NFL cities. Its whether the coaching staff has the patience to take the heat, and ownership allows him the patience.

I don't know from Rivera's comments that it says much more than Cam's one of guys we are looking at. The vetting process has just begun.

If we take a qb with the first pick, although it may not seem likely now, it will be Gabbert. I think he will interview better and he will have a solid pro day. This also means we will need a veteran for a year or so. Enter Volek. Continue to develop Clausen and Pike (PS). Would I use the first pick on that? I would hate to, but a lesser QB might be better than a better DE.

I also think Mallet might remind Rivera of Rivers. I see it, I don't know if anyone else does.
