I dispute the assertion that Jenkins was the best DT in the league in 2003. In 2002 he was dominant, but I think he had some competition for that title in 2003. One could even argue that Rogers was one of those few at that top tier in '03. But sure, he's an awesome force when healthy, but given that he's been healthy for 14 quarters in the last two years, it makes me pine for Rogers.

Hard to call Rodgers elite. Very good run stuffer? Yes. Prone to wearing down toward the end of seasons though. Not as athletic as Jenks.

Hard to complain about Jenks showing up 345 when Rodgers is lucky to get down to his listed weight.

Given our run defense is actually pretty good, we'd be better with Rodgers sure than Cartsens, but its more of Jenks ability to get inside pressure without blitzing that we miss more.

and past that, Rogers whipping Mitchell is only a little more than what the other DTs have done against us. He made impact out there, but when I've watched him over the last few years, he looks more Gilbert Brown than he does Richard Seymour.

And past that, it took to last year for Rogers to really come to play at this level hard.

Several NFL people cited in various columns either called Rogers the best DT in the game last season or "one of," so there's absolutely no question at all about him being elite. He is amazing against the run, but he is also adept at collapsing the pocket on the pass rush. Note that I'm not knocking Jenkins. I love Jenkins and I'm the one who keeps saying that he's our best defensive player. I'm just saying that Shaun Rogers is a fucking beast and I'd love to have him (especially since he hasn't had Jenkins' freak injuries).

And Magnus, you really might want to check Rogers' 2003 season.

So NFL writers' opinions are important for Shaun Rogers but not for Julius Peppers? [IMG] I think there's something to be said for a relative consensus that doesn't make it right.

Rogers is a good player. He's still not Jenkins, though, and in the end, while I don't want to get into it, it sounds like we're trying to rehash a five year old discussion.

It seems that poor throws have been a much bigger issue than decision making. The one he threw to Bailey was a bad decision.

The other two? Just poorly thrown balls.

Granted, I put you on the defensive tonight so it's natural for you to see things a certain way, but I did phrase that poorly. I was saying that various people who are actually employed in the NFL were cited in various columns as saying that Shaun Rogers was the best or one of the best DTs in the NFL last season. Note that those were the same people we touted as saying that Jenkins was the best or one of the best DTs back in '03. Most hype-writers still don't know who Shaun Rogers is.

And Rogers is not just a "good" player. We all just watched him play, so downplaying his abilities just because you want to argue with me about something only makes you look silly.

i'm not railing you for any stupid shit happening in any other thread. I'm not disagreeing with you on the Peppers argument - I agreed. So it's not about that, either. I'm just saying it's funky to use that against one guy, and for another guy.

All I'm saying is that, with two different situations, you're citing media as reason he's good, and in another, you're arguing completely against that as a reason why a player isn't as good as advertised. I personally don't think media is that indicative of ability.

Rogers was alternate Pro Bowl in 03, and I know that. He was good. I felt like he really stepped up and became a near-dominant player in 04. Nobody's arguing that he's bad, or that he's average. Personally, I still think Kris is the pick, healthy, head up. Seeing what he can do,
The injuries hurt. And Rogers having a mild injury history, at a highly advanced weight, I don't know that he'll hold up every year, either. So I'm discounting that, right or wrong.

:lmao: Wow, I must really be under your skin because you are making a complete ass out of yourself tonight.

Re-read my post above and then see if you can figure out what you missed.

Hell, in case you don't bother, I never said that the media was a reason to think Shaun Rogers is good. I said that NFL people cited by the media were the ones saying that Rogers had become the best (or one of) DT in the game, just as they had said of Jenkins in 2002.
