I've looked on the 'net about fifty times and each time someone has a different theory. There's some reasonable cases for paralleling the joker to Bob Dylan. There's mention of Lennon, but is it Lenin or just McLean making a play on words because of the Communist worryings of the time?people could probably put together theory degrees on just this type thing.

To me, it's about the passing of an era. Kennedy got shot, there was war and riots, protestors, and Elvis started making bad movies. All that shit.
But yeah, the day the music died was supposed to be when Holly's plane crashed. He's thinking back to a simple time, when the music was still innocent, and the world seemed less harsh.
