didnt mean it personal, plus I didnt know. just for my needs, I didnt need the extra graphics. It's crazy how far the games have advanced, to the point where some computers can't even support them. dell guy even asked if I played games etc. when I ordered to make sure I had the correct computer for my needs(read: he was trying to sell me every upgrade possible)

Let's head back over to NOTD first. :)

I made my first Pentium last 6 years. Lightning hit our apartment building and fried the modem (and connection) though. I was bitter. Next one lasted 3 years before the motherboard went.

So I applaud Thelt squeezing 7 years outta one. You have to be cheap and patient to do that. Your next PC will make you feel like you've left the Stone Age.

the trick to making an old pc to not feel too old is to not install the latest software. i suspect more code goes into getting that stupid little paperclip to jump around your screen than went into the original version of word.

I still envy the guys who could code a game at 640K. No bloat there at all.

The real jump came when I got my latest computer. I finally went out and bought some big budget software (shooters, etc.) and it really did seem like I came out of a cave to play some of them.

If I was in the market for a desktop, and beings I'm not an aficionado, I'd get a MacMini and boost the RAM.

games are coming out now on DVD. there's a good number of them that require 5gb free to install. now that's mostly artwork and stuff, but still.

my barrel patrol game that i wrote ages and ages ago (still developing it... yeah right) is under 1 mb and most of that is the artwork. i think the app itself is like 95k.

My current PC was purchased in 1998 and it is a pentium 2 with a 266 megahertz processor. I have upgraded it a bit over the years so that it now has a 20 gig hard drive and the original 4 gig as extra storage. It has 256 megs of ram. I am running Windows 98se. It really does not seem a whole lot slower than the new one I use at work which is a pentium 4 with 2 gig of processor speed. I have been very happy with it. It is however starting to get to be a bit of a burden. A lot of new stuff wont work on it.

I am not a big game player so that is probably why I can stretch it so long. The only thing I ever played much on it was Diablo 2.
