Hurney did build two NFC finalists in three seasons. It hasn’t been “all bad” over the years. Overall, I’ve been pleased with how he’s performed given the circumstances he came into. What a shit show.

I'm pleased with his 2019 performance. Hopefully it carries over onto the field.

Hurney sucked when JR took a more “active” role after his heart transplant. He was pretty good before then.

I'm convinced there a few truths of GMing:
You live and die on your drafts
It only takes a 3 bad drafts to become the Lions*
No GM can sustain drafting well for a long period of time whether that is attrition below them or just the randomness of the NFL draft you can't outrun it unless you stay long enough to hit a good streak again.

*Having a great QB can overcome this- see some of Belichik's dreadful drafts though he seems to have gotten better since losing his Florida/Rutgers obsession.

Seems like the guys who are really good at drafting are horrible at managing the cap.

Sometimes drafting well consistently creates cap problems that are hard to deal with over time trying to keep those well drafted.

That's a factor, but they also tend to overpay other people's draft picks. Marty Hurney overpaying other team's draft picks had a lot to do with Julius Peppers leaving for Chicago.
