I used to untill I got so many live Ween CDs that I couldnt keep up with mailing them off.

I'm nervous, my two internet worlds have collided. I've come very close to calling for an invasion of that site, but I'm friends with quite a few people there.

Ween get down and brown on qUEBEC

    by chad beck
    Austin, TX

Ignorance is ugly and pitiful. It's why racists fear what they don't understand and are too lazy for fact checking, which would surely dispel their unfounded stereotypes, insular worldviews and partiality to keeping things "separate." The same can be said of those who have relegated WEEN to joke band status despite the band's incredible output over its long and storied career, some of which, yes, has been amusing. These pitiful folk, like the racists, need to educate themselves about the objects of their misunderstanding. qUEBEC, WEEN's grandiose new record (due August 5 on Sanctuary) would be a fantastic place for naysayers, ignorants and innocent bystanders to start.

Fifteen songs in fifty-six glorious minutes, qUEBEC will sound like magic to any longtime follower of Boognish, the mysterious deity, the original spark, if you will, behind Dean and Gene WEEN. The revelation on qUEBEC is heard in the elegance (wall of acoustic guitars, vocal shenanigans, sitar solo) of "Tried and True," as well as the sincerity of "I Don't Want It." Sure, there's a pun phrase about "smell my hole" on "Tried" and the latter tune closes with a classic Deaner solo, albeit played through a craptacular distortion pedal. qUEBEC is so earnest, though, it will leave longtime fans confused and delighted at WEEN's latest transformation. Dean and Gene successfully shift the "WEEN sound" on qUEBEC into previously uncharted territory, daring listeners to expand their tastes to include everything from Motorhead riffage to ambient sound collages.

That being said, this is the "brownest" WEEN album in quite some time. For the uninitiated, this means we once again hear drug references ("It's Gonna Be A Long Night"), expletives and, yes, some silly wordplay. Take, for example, "When the bases are loaded, I'm whackin' the ball!" ("Zoloft"). qUEBEC, however, is mostly hushed and morose. In between "Fancy Pants" and "Transdermal Celebration" (both sound exactly as you would imagine, by the way), there is a lot of down-tempo, Floyd-like ruminating and expansive soundscapes. Much of the record becomes a sonic tapestry after a few spins, giving the listener a different impression of WEEN and their sound each time. The grooves of qUEBEC produce such a variety of characters, voices, textures, moods, patterns and emotions that you'd be damn ignorant to continue distancing yourself from the best band on the planet because of one schmaltzy video that Beavis and Butthead thought was hilarious back in 1992. Get to know your brown brothers, man. It's 2003, and Dean and Gene WEEN are still the best reason to own a stereo.
