(ESPN.com) PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby was assisted off the ice after crashing into the rear boards leg-first midway through the first period of Friday night's game against Tampa Bay.

Crosby was favoring his right leg as he left the ice, in visible pain, but the extent of any injury was not immediately known.
Crosby and Lightning defenseman Paul Ranger became tangled near the right circle in the Lightning end, with Crosby swiping at the puck as he landed on the ice rear end-first. His momentum caused him to slam into the boards with his right leg, his left leg raised.
Ranger was called for slashing on the play, but the Penguins did not score on the ensuing power play.
Crosby, the NHL's scoring champion and MVP at age 19 last season, had moved into a tie with Atlanta's Ilya Kovalchuk and Tampa Bay's Vincent Lecavalier with 63 points going into Friday night's games. Crosby had five goals and 15 assists in his previous 12 games.

 

The NHL should shut down until he is healthy again.

I think he would, but he seems to prefer lopsided trades. He is so confident that he is going to win this league, can't wait until playoffs.

 

I like the trade but my team is center heavy right now (-Crosby). I was able to dump a couple of Rangers so I am good now.

I willing to give up a winger for Crosby, even though he is out for more than a month but listed as DTD.

 

6-8 weeks is the latest, but his leg was too swollen to do the MRI

Malkin promised Friday after Crosby was lost indefinitely with a high ankle sprain to try to replace Crosby's missing offence and, so far, he has with three goals and an assist in Pittsburgh's first two games without Crosby.
Malkin has 12 goals in 11 games.
