And no one mentioned Art Schleister?

Possibly the biggest bust in NFL history.

how could I forget Andre Ware

Another one of Detroit's first round picks several years ago...last name was Rogers/ a DL. He got drunk and ran a redlight in Pontiac killing something like 4 people and injuring himself out of football.

And of course, Detroits seems to know a thing or two about first round offensive lineman busts. What, you've went OT three years in a row, one is a marginal starter, one a backup Guard and the third is out of football?

They are very happy with Jeff Backus...they project him to be at a pro-bowl level....they are calling him their best draft pick since Barry Sanders. Stockar McDougal was drafted as a tackle and moved gaurd...where he was often injured. Due to injuries, he wound up back at left tackle and played well...shutting down a few big name pass rushers. McDougal will be starting at tackle this year. ...although he needs to stay healthy.

Aaron Gibson was cut because he couldn't keep the weight off and made too many personal foul penalties...the last straw was when he belly flopped on someone after the whistle when detroit had just converted a crucail 4th down in the 4the quarter. he was cut the following Monday and signed by Dallas. He actually couldn't finish several games because of his conditioning/weight...plus he couldn't get into the secondary blocks on running plays.

McDougal started all of 3 games last year. He was healthy enough to play a series or two at guard according to the Lions website, but not good enough to win a starting spot, even after Gibson got cut.

Compared to those two, Backus must look like a Pro Bowler.

the problem was he missed most camp and Matt Joyce came in and played tackle effectively (which wasn't expected)..he'll be back at his natural position RT this year. When he's healthy, he is effective...I don't think Mcdougal has ever been 100% since he has been there.

Changing offensive lineman isn't like changing lugnuts...they work as a unit, if you keep moving people around and brining new people in, the unit as a whole will suffer.
