    The NFC’s defensive player of the month is Panthers linebacker Jon Beason. The second-year pro from Miami is only the second Panthers linebacker to win the award, and the first since Sam Mills in 1996.

    I think that's incorrect.
    Mike Rucker won the September DPOTM in 2002 and 2003.

    I believe the quote was referring to linebackers, rather than defensive players.

    allright, allright, I got it. FWIW, I think those are the only players to win that award on D, so my mind snapped right to that.
