More on the story...

    Watanabe Talks Batman

Ken Watanabe, who plays a mysterious mentor to Bruce Wayne in the upcoming Batman Begins prequel film, told the Batman on Film Web site that he liked the story's darkness. "I chose the part because I liked the script," Watanabe told the site. "I picked it out immediately."

Watanabe (The Last Samurai) will play Ra's Al Ghul, familiar to fans of the DC Comics Batman series as one of the caped crusader's most formidable nemeses. In selecting Batman Begins as his next project, Watanabe said, "I don't really have a strategy, but I do pay attention to the way the script envisages the world and how that view is conveyed through the roles, as well as what the director wants to express. In Batman Begins I play a villain who has to guide a person who is wavering between good and evil. Exploring the dark side of human nature is something that interests me."

Christopher Nolan is directing Batman Begins, starring Christian Bale. The movie is currently in production for release in June 2005.

    Cool!

     Batman Faces New Foes

David Goyer, who wrote the script for the upcoming prequel film Batman Begins, told SCI FI Wire that he and director Christopher Nolan made a conscious decision to include previously unfilmed villains—the Scarecrow and Ra's Al Ghul—in the story of the caped crusader's origins. "I felt very strongly that we should use characters that hadn't been depicted in the films before," Goyer said at Comic-Con International in San Diego over the weekend. "I was familiar with the rogue's gallery of Batman's foes, but fortunately, I felt, in the case of Scarecrow and Ra's Al Ghul, that they were two really great villains that hadn't been used."

Cillian Murphy (28 Days Later) plays Dr. Jonathan Crane/the Scarecrow, a former college professor who uses a fear toxin to kill people. Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai) will play Ra's Al Ghul (Arabic for "The Devil's Head"), a brilliant and mystical terrorist. For Goyer, the two villains tied into the movie's overarching theme of fear. "I happen to think that Ra's Al Ghul is unique as a Batman villain because his goals, though certainly perverted, are somewhat... more realistic," Goyer said. "The Scarecrow is unique, because it's allowed [us] the opportunity to depict a villain that's truly scary and frightening. Because Chris and I wanted to tell a story about fear and overcoming your fear. It seemed like a no-brainer."

Goyer wasn't deterred by the idea of having two villains, which has rendered previous Batman movies a little crowded. "I know some people were concerned," he said. "'Oh, my God, they're going to do two villains.' But we wouldn't have done it if it didn't fit in a very organic way. Chris is a real taskmaster and a perfectionist. When you're working with him—and Cillian can attest to this—he's hypercritical about everything. Everything has to make sense. Everything has to be motivated. ... Fortunately, we were able to come up with a story that made perfect and total sense why there were two of them and why they were woven into the story, and it's very organic." Batman Begins, starring Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, is currently shooting, with an eye to a June 2005 release.

old thread but I finally saw this on HBO this month. I couldn't have been more wrong. This was a helluva good movie - much better than any of the others.
