NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Baron Davis is sticking with the Hornets after all, signing a multiyear contract extension with the team on Tuesday.
Terms were not disclosed by the Hornets, who recently moved to New Orleans from Charlotte, but Davis reportedly had been offered six-year deal surpassing $84 million — the maximum under the league’s collective bargaining agreement.
Hornets executive vice president Bob Bass called the agreement ‘‘a terrific long-term commitment to the city of New Orleans.’’
‘‘Our owners’ intention is to sign the best possible players and bring the best possible team to New Orleans,’’ Bass said.
Earlier this month, the All-Star guard said he was weighing what direction the team was headed, and wanted to find out more about New Orleans.
‘‘I’m looking forward to starting a new winning tradition here in New Orleans,’’ Davis said in a prepared statement. ‘‘We have a great team and a great chance to build on our success. So I hope the fans and the city are as excited as I am.’’
Davis averaged 18.1 points, 8.5 assists and 4.3 rebounds last season.
Team co-owner George Shinn said the contract ‘‘solidifies our team for years to come since he’s already an All-Star at the young age of 23.’’
Coach Paul Silas said Davis had shown ‘‘maturity and leadership on and off the court.’’
‘‘We can’t wait to show our fans in New Orleans what a quality team we have as we continue to make strides and contend for a championship,’’ Silas said.

If the hornets would have committed to building a winning team and actually signed the other all-star free agents when they were here, then they would still be the Charlotte Hornets. The only free agent they signed was Larry Johnson and it was for way too much money. It just makes me upset seeing that quote about how they are committed to New Orleans

I like Baron - Paul Silas has done a great job bringing him along, and the kid really has potential to be something special. But I love basketball, and will miss the Hornets (but NOT the ownership). While I agree the salaries are exorbitant, I wouldn't refuse a huge pay increase if it was offered. In Adam Smith's view of the free market, "whatever the market will bear", right? Also admit that I am a "ho"...

In regard to the deal - ShinnRidge HAD to do it. The Bugz have a solid nucleus - but they have to show the fans (at least early) that they'll put the money into the team. If they didn't, their lovely new arena would be as empty as the current Hive.

The NBA let the Hornets move - otherwise, they'd have to deal with litigation - and the league has enough issues right now. The league would also love an ownership group involving Larry Bird, but have to go through "the process" (a formality?), to ensure all groups are considered. I'm confident the NBA knows that Charlotte is a viable market - much more than The Big Easy.

The hands were played the only way the cards would allow. I just wish ShinnRidge would fold - it would be better for the league.

He also might have decided to sign the deal because the place he really wanted to play LA - is no longer interested in him - and won't be for a while. The Clippers traded for Andre Miller yesterday.

Must be nice to sign for the max with the team that is your second choice.
