Doubt it. The main thing the punt returner has to do is catch a ball that is coming from much higher. If the KO returner drops it, he usually has a chance to pick it up. Smart hasnt even been mentioned as a candidate, and I bet he can't catch the punts. Like Michael Bates.

Gamble could be doing it though, if they don't want to overwhelm him, and if he can catch them.

Baker was also back on KO returns. I'm sure they didn't want Foster back there since he was starting. I didn't think he was that good at it anyway. Returning is different that reading blocks, breaking tackles when they usually come one at a time, etc.

If they inactivate Baker again, I'd try Goings back there. Not all that fast, but he has a nose for space.

as for Smart doing punt returns -- has there ever been a running back that also did punt returns? I'm sure there has been here or there but it's a rare site.

Smart did a really good job kick offs

I thought Baker did fine. His first two returns were for 12 yards, with that interference in between. He got caught trying to slide sideways down the field and gained nothing on the other one.

Today. Hard to imagine that Colbert could make the big plays Smitty did last year against Wash, Tampa, Dallas, St Louis, Indy, etc.

But it's good to have depth.

Eric Metcalf was more of an RB at the beginning of his career, and morphed into a slot-back. I'd say he qualifies as a PR/RB

Winslow Oliver for us, 1996 - 1997. He had 598 yds in '96, second-best in NFL. Historically he was much better as a returner than as an RB.

Yep, 30.4 yds yesterday. :applause: He needs to keep it up. Michael Bates went to the pro bowl after '96 with 30.2.

    Baker is fine
Sure team gives up a little punt return yds

But Baker is sure handed and makes sure Panthers keep the ball.

Rod could forget to fair catch one and get knocked out a few weeks and with Davis out, Rods just an injury away from being a starter or Goings backup.
