Anyone that doesn't realize that the past 2 seasons his running game gave him the lowest 3rd down yards to gain average and the defense gave him the best average starting field position is dumber.

The steelers won with Ben because they dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball for 2 seasons..not because of Big Dumb Ben.

And led the NFL in takeaways last season, correct?

Fyi, I know you find it amusing to tweak me every day, but you should be careful not to do it in a way that makes you look dumb. Then you just lump yourself with the rest of those who follow me around from thread to thread.

Fair point, but you might as well mention that he obliterated a good Denver team that took apart Tom Brady the game before that, right? Look, he's a young guy and he's not perfect, but you don't throw away two years of evidence because you'd rather believe in a couple of anomalous games. It's true that he wasn't asked to win many games for Pittsburgh his first two years, but it's also true that he made plays most of the time he was asked. He has good mechanics, he has a very good arm, he reads defenses well, he's mobile, and he's tough. There really isn't much to dislike about him as a quarterback, but sure, he's going through a hell of a rough patch right now. All that said, I still lay odds on him winning more often than not.

    I disagree.

He is throwing off his back foot under pressure this season and he does not read defenses very well.

He didn't have to read defenses very well the past two seasons because he was always in 3rd and less than five with a good running game. Play action made life very easy on him. Not the same story this year. He is in third and long all day looking at nickle sets with the blitz coming from places he's never seen.

That's fine, I'm honestly not concerned with making you agree with me. But I've watched Ben quite a bit as far back as Miami and I'm quite sure he does have good mechanics and that he does read defenses well. Right now he's just gun-shy and trying to do too much on his own. And fyi, Roethlisberger was clutch even in obvious passing situations the last two seasons, so you can't pretend it was all play action. For instance, in that Denver game where he killed the Broncos after they had beaten Brady, the Steelers couldn't run for shit (2.7 yard average) but Roethlisberger won the game with his arm.

You're right, they did lead the league in takeaways last year - 31 of which were INTs .

I'd suspect this was because Cinci had a penchance for putting up points, forcing other teams to go pass happy to keep up with them.

Regardless, you didn't really qualify you claim that they were a good defense - typically good defense is judged by points given up or yards given up. This year, Cinci is 19th in scoring defense and 25th in total (ypg) defense.

My appologies for not reading your mind that you were using the rarely used total turovers stat to rate the defense.

I wasn't trying to tweak you. While I have picked at you in the past, this is not one of those times. I disagreed with your statement and questioned it. It's called "debate" and "discussion".

Here's how that conversation should go:

<Collin> Roethlisberger has had struggles this years, but he's been playing against some very good defenses
<Clay> Cincinatti's considered a good defense? They are in the bottom half of the league in passing, rushing, total and scoring defense.
<Collin> While they do give up a lot of yards, they did lead the league in takeaways last year and are in the top 5 this year. As such, it could be argued that they are a good defense; they did pick off Ben 3 times.
<Clay> I see your point. I still wouldn't call Cincinnatti a great defense, especially when compared to San Diego and Jacksonville, who are both top 10 in total defense and scoring defense. But to each his own.

I'll make a deal with you - I won't try to tweak you in any way shape or form if you refrain from overreactions.

I don't know about all that. I don't know what your credentials are but from what I've watched this season he is clueless in nickel packages and his mechanics have been aweful.

BTW, Denver didn't beat NE last year, they beat themselves with 5 turnovers and still had the ball with a chance to take the lead in the 2nd half.

Who the fuck are you again? Just because I don't get on a message board to post about my team every day does not make me less of a fan. If your definition of "rolling out of the wood work" is getting on here and talking about them, something is seriously wrong with your thought process.

Having said that, I agree with Collin that you can't judge Roethlisberger's performance based on the three games this season. He has come back from a motorcycle accident and appendectomy, all within a couple months of the season starting. Salisbury said on ESPN that the off-season is just that, a time to relax. Roethlisberger didn't get to do a whole lot of that, with the constant press attention, motorcycle accident, and appendectomy. He is still 26-7 as a starter, which is pretty fucking impressive. There is alot more to the Steelers woes this year than Roethlisberger. Recievers have been dropping passes and the running game hasn't been what it has in the past. The Cinncinati game would have been won if it wasn't for Colclough's muffed punt return. That is the difference between 1-3 and 2-2. Panthers fans know all about that situation with the Minnesota game a couple weeks ago.

I didn't say that Cincinnati was a "good defense." I said that he's played against some tough defenses, and he has. Jacksonville and San Diego are both certainly tough, which is what I meant. Meanwhile Cincinnati is good at creating turnovers, which is what hurt Roethlisberger in that game.
No need to apologize for that. Apologize for being so stupid that you couldn't comprehend how my statement would be referring to San Diego and Jacksonville instead of suggesting that every single defense he's played is world class. That's your problem, that you're so bitter about looking like a moron in past exchanges that you expend a great deal of effort trying to nit-pick over everything I say, looking for a mistake, but you only succeed in making yourself look stupid. This is far from the only incident, which is why I warned you before. You've done this repeatedly in the last few weeks and only ended up making yourself look like a clueless idiot.
If you really believe that, then you're not being honest with yourself. The sheer number of times you've done this recently pretty conclusively proves that you're consciously looking for ways to nit-pick my statements.
    <Collin> Which I didn't, dumbass.
