A hurdle a fat paycheck could take care of. Plus hed have like the #1 pick in the draft to find one.

If Cowher wont bite anyone see Dungy and Meeks together again?

This is all great banter, but if there's a lock-out, it will be very difficult to hire a new coach. And if I'm an A-lister like Cowher or Gru, I wouldn't want to jump back into the league until it gets it's act together.

Everyone wants to make it as simple as "go get him", but there's a lot more involved than just that. The shit's chess, it ain't checkers.

Jay Haas had a share of the lead in the final round of the 2004 Tour Championship.

Morale to the story is simple: fuck it.

If Jerry had known how bad Moore would suck this year I feel sure he would have had Hurney find a solid veteran QB. Jerry was probably willing to have another 7-9 year but not what we are experiencing now.

Trade down, recover a second rd pick, trade Smitty for a pick and hire someone who knows player personnel

I don't think the lack of GM is killing us. Of course, that will become useless if a new coach and Hurney don't get along, or if that coach wants ultimate power.

Even then we have a checks-and-balances idea that guards that. The coach says what he wants, and Hurney's job is to go get that based on the staff. That the GM doesn't have a divergent opinion himself keeps ego from getting in the way, and the coach gets what he wants without directly naming the player all that often.

I've suggested Hurney in a VP football ops role, but Gregory's a good scouting director and we have good scouts. I have problems with our pro scouting department, though we've had some good bargain guys in 08 and 09. I liked Tony Softli, and when he was a scout and I was a writer he would feed me some stuff now and again, but Gregory's just outdrafting him.

Then again, I don't think the problem is talent. I don't think that suddenly we have nothing to build on or that we haven't drafted well. I don't think I'd think that our various trades the last two years, that those players were shit if they were just a 2nd and 3rd round pick. It's the trade value that hurts, more than that Brown is horseshit.

But the Hurney as VP/Ops seemed to vanish in my mind with Morrison's hire. Maybe it's not out of play, but they have their guy running the team, and then Hurney's just extra.

you could do it, it's just a waste to spend time completely rebuilding a defense that's playing well. Beason, Brown, Conner, that's all that fits right now. Instead of "a DT", we're now looking at like 6 new starters again.

And Beason fitting the defense is a big deal. We've seen that. You can play Beason in an ill fit, and say that we're still playing good defense, but it's directly misusing our best player. It's not irreconcilable that you put scheme over player, but if there's a tiebreaker needed, using our best defensive player correctly is a good one, yes?

sure, but directly after JR said that about sucking the energy out of the stadium, he hired a guy no one realistically knew other than the SB year. He promised, I think, specifically a more progressive offense, and we didn't get that. We were building around Weinke, too.

Either way, not building around the more flashy name worked out.

I don't think the only reason to not hire Cowher is money. The defense is a legitimate concern. He can only really count on one of his old assistants - Gailey. The same Chan that was good enough to get fired in preseason that one year, and has no business coaching Buffalo. He's always done a good job with assistants - tons of them were HCs on both sides of the ball - but most of them not good. Assistants are important, sure. He doesn't have anything to add there.

huh...you bring up a good point about two guys who are super bowl winners in the booth.

These guys have income. They've probably made more than most of the coaches, as a talking head. So they're not hurting.

So it doesn't hurt them to come to an agreement in a few months, if there's stoppage, because they're covered. I imagine the networks have to pay them regardless of whether there's something to cover.

I don't want to see a work stoppage, but it'd damn sure be interesting. How many teams will fire guys who are just kinda OK, to not pay them? How many teams will still operate like normal, or even take the loss on the year to jump others for 2011?
