Are all artificial turf fields the same though? it seems that there would have been a ton of improvement from the carpet stuff they used in the '80s by now.

nearly double net worth of the 2nd richest owner... trying to save on grass costs.

I'm not buying the nerd thing either cause a nerd wouldn't burn money on CMC contract.

He's Dan Snyder without the PR disasters (yet)

I never played on turf, so I can't speak from personal experience. However, I can tell the difference between grass and turf when coaching...turf is harder on the knees and lower back when you're just standing on the sideline.
    But...I am old...so...

Assuming you were able to avoid popping a knee ligament when you tried to make a cut, the second worst part of the old artificial turf was the constant turf burns.

I played on the old artificial 'turf' (fucking indoor/outdoor carpet on packed sand) in college, two decades before the current field turf was invented, and it was hard as concrete in the winter and it was hard on the whole body.

We played one of our playoff games in the old Astrodome my senior year and it was exactly as you describe. I don't see how the Oilers played so many games there. It was brutal. Even our high school stadium had more padding than the Astrodome.

My sister was an Oilers cheerleader for a coupla years there in the late 70's early 80's. She says that even them and the halftime dancers incurred injuries on that field. I never played on that one. But I did see a few concerts there including the Stones front row center for their 1981 tour. With tarps on it it was like hardwood.

They must be making it better as the Panthers are the 18th team to use.

I do agree with tharan that the newest stuff (I've been on as a coach) is burns. It's not nearly as hard as the older stuff. Without cleats to get stuck wearing sneakers, it's not bad and has a landing that's more giving, like grass with a medium base.

Traction is way better'n grass, so the knees and especially ankles can take a beating with cleats especially.
