I'm wondering if you read the links.

And I'm with you in thought - I 'want' to want HDTV. But damn if the technical arguments don't make alot of sense for EDTV. The biggest being regular TV.

But I agree that most of the programming i watch will be HDTV - network primetime, HBO (Deadwood, Sproanos), and Sports. BUT - Do I want to drop $2500 and have my DVDs look worse that my 36" Wega XBR tube? B/c from what I've read, it will.

Also - on 'wasting' the $1500 - that's a tough call. For $1500, all my TV will look better. HD programming, DVD, SD. Improvement all around. The HDTV will ONLY improve for HDTV, my other viewing will look worse than my WegaXBR tube. In 5 years, when the HDTV plasmas are $1500, and there are HD DVD's, I'll throw it away. I'd throw it away in 5 years, anyway.

And as Harry said - EVERYTHING I've read says the Panny EDTV plasma is BETTER for viewing HDTV than many HDTV sets - including many of the DLP sets.

my dvds look awesome. come check it out sometime. my first tv crapped out and they tried to give me a edtv plasma to replace my broken tv since i bought the last one. best thing to do is go and look at the different tv's side by side and decide for yourself. it's your eye that will be watching the picture...no i didnt read the articles. Go here and do some research. These people are hardcore.

In all seriousness dave, I read AVS from time to time and I still think the Panny EDTV is the way to go. I have one completely unrelated thing keeping me from buying one or I would have pulled the trigger months ago. What meat said about watching regular DTV, DVDs and HDTVs, and having them ALL look good as opposed to just 1 or 2 of the 3 is what decides it for me. A buddy of mine who has an engineering degree, worked for Phillips b4 grad school, and now practices patent law (and can afford whatever), bought the Panasonic EDTV plasma and called it the best TV on the market. I saw his and the drool started immediately.

Meat, if you get it, are you getting the stand or a wall mount? If the stand, where are you gonna buy that and what kind of price can you get?

Also, are you gonna go with the default hookup boxes? Think I will.

Dave - I've never heard of a HD DVD. I presume that it's native at 768?

I thought DVD was capped at 480 - which would make them look inherently better on an EDTV. Where do you get HD DVDs?

    Thanks.

I think I'm gonna get the Bello that is here:

    http://www.bello.com/Plasma/pvs-4260.asp

    http://www.bello.com/Plasma/pvs-4260-additional.asp

It's almost like wall mount,b/c of the display mount. Also - I'll need something to put my components on, even if it is wall mounted. I think you can get that for about $700 delivered - if I did wall mount myself, It'd be about $200 for the mount delivered, plus I'd need to buy furniture for my components - so I *think* this is a better option. Plus I can move it.

Yeah - Bootay has the 50" HD version - he says the hookups are fine.

I'm wondering whether to get the side mount crap speakers - the main reason this is OK to get for wifey is that it's kid safe - the mounting at least. My WEGA is front heavy 300 lbs - aka 'baby-crusher'. So, that's her reason for replacing it. Safety.

I can't find a good mount that has a spot for front speakers - I can Velcro some small bookshelves on the bello. I have a center and rears already. Before kids, I ran the WEGA through Vandersteens. No room for that anymore.

im pretty sure the sienfeld dvd box sets are hd and the special edition tommy boy will be in hd. more and more shows are going to hd, not backward. edtv looks good but I dont think its the best picture you can get. Ill take my sports and other shows looking the best over some sd shows that will eventually go to hd. its all personal preference. you might have to give a little in one area to gain in another. what kind of dvd player do you have, meat?

I have a samsung hd931. It was one of the first players to have dvi output. The picture is like night and day compared to component cables. There is a newer version hd941? 942 or something like that. Only thing I dont like is the remote..might be the worst remote ever. Most people seem to like the denon models.
Try to buy a tv with 2 hdmi or dvi connections. Mine only has one but it doesnt really matter right now since time warner wont get off their asses and activate the hdmi connection on the hd dvr box.
