The 04 offense was no more one demensional than the one in 03. In 03, Smith caught 88 passes for 1110 yards and 7 TD's, while Moose had 54 catches for 837 yards and 3 TD's. Compare that to the wideouts of '04:

    Muhammad 93 1405 16TD
    Colbert 47 754 5 TD

It's clear that in both seasons, one wideout was dominant over the other. That's usually how it works. The reason why Smith's numbers of 03 were less than Moose's of 04, namely the TD category, was our RB's more prominent role in the redzone. This is why I would argue that a healthy group of RB's would take less pressure off of our wideouts.

Second half of the year, and in the playoffs, Muhsin was a step behind Smith, not half of Smith. That's part of why we got there.

We're just a lesser team without the guy.

I certainly can't argue that. But if the worst case scenario arises, and Moose has to go, we can be just as productive with Smith across from Colbert. Would you like to have all three, with Colbert playing the slot, hell yeah. This is where I agree with you. But there is a financial burden to this, which is why we need to consider all options and possible outcomes.

I agree we can't give the guy truckloads of cash, but I'm not deluding myself into thinking that the offense is just as productive with Moose gone. I think the Eagles and San Diego both have cap room to spare and the need for a man with his skills, not to mention both should be well in the mix for the Super Bowl next year. I'm not so sure we can say the same thing here.

I would like to think we could be as productive, but I'd also like to see where Colbert has or projects to make the level of plays either has made, to even consider it. I don't think it's likely.

Considering our passing offense is about 80% WR, I'd say spending on WR is a necessity.

I would love to have Moose back but I think we can get by with one great receiver and some complimentary guys like Colbert and a free agent/draft pick. We really need to make our OL better. I believe the biggest reason we are so inconsistent is that our OL can not beat any body. We can not impose ourselves on other teams with the OL.

I would make a reasonable offer to Moose. If he wants more than that I would let him try free agency but leave our offer on the table and ask him to get back to us for a chance to match other offers he gets. If he really wants to stay like he has said then he would atleast do that much.

Do we gain anything by not waiving him now verses the day before that bonus kicks in?

there's no difference, and once we cut him, I don't think we'd try to sign him back because we'd have dead money from him, PLUS his new contract.
