In the NY Times, former Patriot Ted Johnson's post-concussion issues are detailed. Sad story.

    Are you listening, Dan Morgan?

"Mr. Johnson’s decline began, he said, in August 2002, with a concussion he sustained in a preseason game against the New York Giants. He sustained another four days later during a practice, after Patriots Coach Bill Belichick went against the recommendation of the team’s trainer, Johnson said, and submitted him to regular on-field contact.Mr. Belichick and the Patriots’ head trainer at the time, Jim Whalen — each of whom remain in those positions — declined to comment on Mr. Johnson’s medical experience with the team or his allegations regarding their actions."
I am sure this happens all the time but still how could Belichick look him in the eye today. Although I am sure Johnson was clamoring to get on the field as well

It is hard to know what is due to his concussions and what is due to his marital problems. It does sound like he has had some damage done to his brain though.

It makes you wonder if all this is tied back to steroids somehow. If nothing else they make players bigger and faster which leads to more violent hits.

I have always wondered, is a knockout the same thing as a concussion? Or can you be knocked out, like a boxer, without suffering a concussion?

    WriteDictionaryPronObjectTag("152", "21", "http://images.encarta.msn.com/xrefmedia/sharemed/targets/audio/pron/a11/A1134900.mp3", "concussion"); con·cus·sion [ kən kúsh'n ] (plural con·cus·sions)

noun Definition: 1. medicine mild brain injury: an injury to the brain, often resulting from a blow to the head, that can cause temporary disorientation, memory loss, or unconsciousness.

I would say, not being a doctor, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, that a concussion is a mild to moderate form or a knock out.

I don't know if Dan uses the old Helmet or has switched to the newer Evo one. Concussions will cut your playing career short.

In the playoffs last season v. NY Giants and v. Seattle--2 out of 3 games. He played against Chicago, and looked fine. Maybe he has a hardy brain or something, but he was asleep against the Giants and Seahawks.

I think boxers can be knocked out without sustaining a concussion. If you hit someon's jaw just right it will push back into the ear canal and cause the loss of consciousness.
