Al Holcomb is in his fourth season on the Giants’ coaching staff. This is his second year as a defensive assistant after spending his first two seasons with the team as the defensive quality control coach.

Prior to joining the Giants, Holcomb spent three seasons as the defensive line coach at Lafayette. In 2008, the Leopards led the Patriot League in both total defense (303.2 yards a game) and scoring defense (17.5 points a game). Lafayette also allowed the fewest first downs in the league (176), had the best defensive third-down conversion percentage (33.6) and had the lowest passing efficiency by opposing quarterbacks (116.0). Defensive lineman Jason Mills was named to the All-Patriot League first team.

In 2007, Holcomb mentored All-Patriot League First-Team tackle Kyle Sprenkle and second-team defensive end Keith Bloom. Lafayette allowed an NCAA-best 260.1 yards per game and ranked fourth in the country in rushing defense (85.7 yards a game) and eighth in scoring defense (16.9 points per game).

In his first season at Lafayette, Holcomb coached defensive end Marvin Snipes and tackles Dan Liseno and Kyle Sprenkle to All-Patriot League honors.

In the summer of 2007, Holcomb participated in the NFL's minority coaching internship with the Jets. He spent mini-camp and training camp working the team’s defense.

Holcomb coached at Division II Kutztown University, where he was the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach in 2004 and 2005 and served as acting head coach in the winter of 2005. Holcomb was the linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Bloomsburg for six seasons from 1998-2003. Bloomsburg played for the Division II national championship in 2000.
Holcomb was linebackers coach, assistant track coach and a physical education instructor at Division III Colby College in Maine in 1997. He was a graduate assistant working with linebackers at Temple in 1995 and 1996.

A 1993 graduate of West Virginia University with a bachelor's degree in sport management, Holcomb earned his master's degree in athletic coaching education from WVU in 1996. He began his coaching career as linebackers coach at Morgantown High School in the fall of 1994, and served as a volunteer administrative assistant with the Mountaineers while pursuing his graduate degree.

 

This hire, along with Mike Shula's, will put us over the top just enough to go the distance. I smell maybe two, three losses TOPS.
