Advantages of Hard Drive Partition ?

Does anyone prefer to partician their hard drive? If so, why? I'm going to be loading up a 60GB hard drive and was wondering if I should partition it.

If so, would you make 2 30's ?

I've got a 60 partitioned as such:

10 Gb for windows 98 (tho I may ditch this)

20 Gb for windows 2000

20 Gb for Data (music files, images, downloads, development, etc.) I like to keep my data seperate from my System as much as possible

10 Gb for Linux, tho this is likely a gonner soon, too.


If you tend to put things where windows is asking you to put it, then partitioning isn't gonna get you too far.

In my old system, I always saved data and mp3 etc to the second physical drive...

I know in the old days motherboards did not like big ass drives and you almost had to partician...

I'm seeing a lot of partitian softward and I know XP utilities will do it too.. just wondered what the big deal was.

My harddrive is partitioned as such:

C: (Win98 - 12gb)
D: (Apps - 7.6gb)
E: (WinXP - 7.6gb)
F: (Storage - 13gb)

I install most of everything on D: and F: is basically for mp3's, website development, misc files, images, etc. Soon I'll drop Win98 on C: and reinstall XP on C:. This will free up E: and I'll merge most of E:'s space onto D: and some onto F:. This will turn the partition structure into:

C: (WinXP - 12gb)
D: (Apps - ~12gb)
E: (Storage - ~15gb)

Somebody tell me why you like having 2 or more operating sytems on your hard drive(s) whats the deal?

I have never liked partitioning drives. It's like asking 1 drive to do the work of 2 drives, or in some cases 3 or 4. I think decreases to preformance of the drive. 2 30g and 2 10g will work better togther than 1 80g partitioned as such. Plus I don't like the stability. In most cases, you lose one, you lose them all. Having a back-up system software doesn't do much good if your drive fails. I like making 2, 3, or 4 drives to do the work of one. JMO.

Sure, multiple drives is the best way to seperate things, but partitioning isn't really any different than just having everything in one big drive, cept for fragmentation.

Personally, I'd love to put all my apps somewhere aside from my OS partition, but alas, Windows doesn't really like that. I finally gave in and just put em where they want me to.

I have a 98 partition because I wasn't sure if I wanted to use 2000 or not (or if it'd run everything I need). It does, so the 98 still exists because I have a couple of games installed there that I still play. Linux is there for development reasons.

I had never really thought of partitioning my hard drive untill I tried playing some of my games online on win 2000 or ME verse 98.
Being that so far 98 runs the more demanding games best many gamers have 98 on their system for geeking out in video game land and whatever new OS system for other Apps.

Man, you guys really go for those multi-boot systems. Cool.

I partition NT/2000 RAID drives because, as long as it's not the boot partition, the capacity can be expanded.

I don't partition my Win98 box, though.
