. . . Pick one guy in last years draft instead of Nelson, and one guy in this years draft instead of Carter. Picking only from players that were still on the board who would you have taken in retrospect?

BTW - I'm not completely writing off either of the above yet. This is just a "what if" inspired by boredom.)

FTR - This year I liked Purdue OT Butler there. That would project either him or Wharton to G but that might happen down the road anyway.
I liked Boldin last year but then we probably wouldn't have taken Colbert OR Carter.

I really did like Boldin. But in the interest of doing something different, I'll leave him out.

Vince Manuwai. We could find a backup center somewhere, but finding Manuwai as the 2nd best guard would've been great. Fine physical prospect who can drive, pull, IMO an all-around fine guard. If we had been looking to actually fill the G position, Manuwai was a better pick.

Really liked Wayne Hunter at OT, felt like he could've played G or T and would've kept us from needing Meadows. Likewise, I really liked Kevin Curtis at WR, felt he could've been a fine deep threat (4.37 40to couple with a 48 wonderlic), decent returner at the least, and would've given us more options at WR.

Alternate: Mike Seidman. No less of a reach at that spot, but Seidman in 2 means taking Manning in the 3rd, and having 3 4ths...If preferable, I did like LJ Smith a bit more than Seidman. Liked Witten more than either, so let's call the pick Witten, giving a trickle down:

4a. Assante Samuel, CB - wouldn't be any worse than what we have.
4b. Brandon Lloyd/Sam Aiken, WR - would've been happy with either that year.
4c. Steve Scuillo - really liked him and then he started for Indy, yes?

I left Branch out. I don't think he will have made a difference by now, and his abscence might've allowed us to actually do something at FS this year.

This year: I really did like Butler a lot, and Kirk Chambers as well. Triandos Luke should IMO be better than Carter or Sam in the end, liked Shawn Johnson at DE, and Vontez Duff as a swing DB.

Good stuff. I've considered Manuwai alot too. He seems like our current staffs type of lineman. He's quick smart and versitile enough. It was a surprise to see him fall to Jax 3rd round pick. All I have heard is that he is progressing well and I have to assume that he could start for us right now.
