I'm not so sure that we haven't overpaid. If he is in fact counting an average of 4.3 mil against the cap then that seems like a fair price tag, although it’s optimistic to expect Jake to stay zippy and sharp til he’s 35 . . . on average that is old for an NFL starter. If he is costing over 7 mil a year then that’s Brady money and unless he takes us where Brady has taken the Pats it seems like too much to me. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
Down the road it could be a very good day, or it could be a day that inspires more bitchin than Jeff Lewis and Kerry Collins combined.)

    >>Would someone please explain to me how the 12 million is magically subtracted from the 38? On average aren’t we paying Jake much more like 7 million (maybe more) than 4.3???

It's not. He was showing base salary, which is fine, but the contract's $7 mil avg (obviously, roughly). That's not going to change, nor is it going to change that it's $2.4 mil every year that counts before salary starts.

Anyway, it's a lot of money. I'm not unhappy with it, nor was I unhappy with Smith's. This whole "we must have the five year deal" is getting funny though. Hopefully he'll keep growing and will always be a gamer.

Some of it, the whole thing with what's happened when we've usually done extensions (or that the Collins and Terry fiascos happened while we were talking extension, or that we paid Capers so long/so much after he'd been fired), has me a little nervous. But that, moreso than Delhomme himself.

Is his signing bonus spread out of the five years of the new contract or is it spread out over the next six years which include the upcoming year that is part of his original two year deal?

He signed a new 6 year deal (2004-2009), the first of which replaces the last year of his original contract.

if'n imma gonna take a chance, i'd much rather take it on him than on losing him. i'm thinking that if we were to have lost him it woulda inspired more bitchin than Jeff Lewis and Kerry Collins ... and not drafty leftwich ... and any and all other perceived mistakes combined multiplied by a million times the anger, depression, gloom, dispair, misery (to borrow from heehaw) and angst. even the blind "faith" crowd woulda been throwing rocks.

does make ya wonder how we so willingly can overpay some guys that we're nervous about their age and ability and temper and then refuse to give an inch after first making a well below market bid on another that was clearly an impact player that we were told we dearly wanted to keep all because we so tied to the "plan"

:applause: I am glad they resigned him. I don't think that we overpaid at all. I think it was extremely fair. I hope Jake continues improving and building on his success from last season. He has a whole year under his belt and almost a whole season as a starter now. He should be even better than last year. I am happy as hell that we have a franchise quarterback. "IF" Jake is even better this year, wouldn't you consider him one?

I bet this deal is back loaded so that we will either renegoitiate with him in about three years or be forced to release him. In any event I am glad he is going to be here for a while. He really progressed last season and should be even better this year.

While the bonus number looks high, it will actually be spread out over three years.

Maybe, his deal isn't backloaded. It looks like most of the hit is up front. I think Jake is only 29. In 5 years he will be 34. That isn't too old, really. I mean how old is Peete now?

I think if Jake continues improving at the same rate as last season he will be one of the top QB's in the leauge. At least in the top 5. I know they won't release him in 3 years,if that's the case. That would be...uh..dumb. :xyzthumbs
