Lutz Announces De'Angelo Alexander To Join Program From Oklahoma
Wing Forward Has Played With USA Basketball Junior World Championship Team

Halton Arena - Charlotte 49ers head coach Bobby Lutz has announced that Oklahoma junior wing forward De'Angelo Alexander (Midwest City, Okla./ Midwest City H.S.) is transferring into the 49ers program. Alexander will sit out the 2004-05 season due to NCAA regulations regarding transfers from Division I institutions. Alexander will be able to practice with the 49ers during the 2004-05 season and will begin play in 2005-06. He will have two years of eligibility remaining with the 49ers.

"De'Angelo is an excellent fit for our program," Lutz said, "both in terms of style of play and timing. He's a relentlesss rebounder from the wing who can shoot well and create opportunities. With our two starting wing players both seniors, he will help plug those holes. We're excited about him joining our program and believe he will make a strong contribution to our team, both this year as a practice player and then over his playing career."

"Charlotte is a place where I will have a great opportunity to try to help them get to the next level. I want to help them get to the Final Four within the next couple of years," Alexander said. "I know coach Lutz is a good coach and they have a real good system. They let you go as long as you get back and defend and that's the way I like to play. They want to win."

Alexander averaged 9.6 points and 4.8 rebounds for the Sooners this past season, starting in 19 of 31 games played. He shot 44 percent from the field and .374 from three-point range, nailing 40 treys. He was named MVP of the Sooner Invitational after averaging 17.5 points in wins over Eastern Washington and Oral Roberts. He also was named all-College MVP, after scoring a career-high 22 points in a win over Princeton, in that one-day event. As a freshman, Alexander averaged 7.1 points and 3.6 rebounds and was named to the Big 12's all-Reserve Team. In the Sooners' 2003 NCAA Tournament run to the Elite Eight, Alexander averaged a team-best 11.8 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting .571 (8-for-14) from three-point range. Alexander shot 39 percent from the floor and .358 from three-point range in his first season.

In addition to his impressive collegiate credentials, Alexander has also represented the United States as a member of USA Basketball. He starred on USA Basketball's 2003 Men's Junior World Championship team, averaging 11.9 points and 6.4 rebounds as the team posted a 7-1 record in Greece. Prior to that event, he averaged 6.2 points and 3.2 rebounds as the U.S. collected the 2003 Global Games gold medal with a 5-0 record in Dallas, Texas. In 2001, he participated in USA Basketball's Youth Development Festival, averaging 18.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.0 assists for the South Team.

A consensus Top 50 national recruit, Alexander was rated as high as #19 by Bob Gibbons and 33rd by Clark Francis as a senior at Midwest City High. Alexander led Midwest City to back-to-back state championships as a sophomore and junior. In his senior season, he averaged 25.3 points and 6.3 rebounds to earn Nike and EA Sports Roundball Classic All-America honors.

Alexander joins an standout incoming class that already includes 6-8 junior college all-America forward E.J. Drayton (Charlotte, N.C./Colby C.C.); 6-8 junior college post player Chris Nance (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Redlands C.C.), 6-1 guard Leemire Goldwire (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Dwyer H.S.) and 6-2 guard Jerrell Lewis (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Hampton Prep).
