I'm with you Magnus. Along with Blakey, Jones was one of my favorites. Ah, the Mingus days... good stuff. I think I'll go home and listen to Pithecanthropus and then maybe some Love Supreme or Coltrane's Paris Concert.

Didn't he also play with Ornette Coleman? I swear I've got a copy of Love Call and New York is Now with him on it.

And since we've both been listening to Sketches of Spain lately, there's a little extra Jones for us!

Elvin Jones may have left us, but his music still goes on!

I just read about Elvin's passing over on Aebersold's board....a great loss to the world of jazz; and to me, personally. I listened to his playing so much while he was with Trane, heard him live with Trane, heard him play a jam session at school...this/his level of jazz is so intimate that one becomes personally involved on a spiritual level as well as musically; a univeral awareness thing, that I cannot put into words.

El Bastardo summed up his playing quite nicely. I ain't never heard a drummer play with more fire in my life. If he didn't put the "fear of God" in ya, you don't got it. :)

    RIP Elvin Jones
